Synthroid and Prevacid

I am having a problem with taking my Prevacid 4 hrs. after Synthroid.  Right now my routine is to take Synthroid when I first get up and 6 AM.  an hour later eat something void of fiber (usually egg sub.)  The 4 hrs. later I take the Prevacid and have another small meal (cereal usually).  The problem is something is causing a bad taste to come back in to my mouth sometime after all this and I am thinking it is because the Prevacid really is not being taken prior to eating.

Has anyone ever tried taking the Prevacid at night or in the middle of the night( 4 hrs prior to Synthroid) so that it is working when I do put food into my stomach?  I just am fearful of interfering with the Synthroid.

Hi, I take Levothy - for Hypo and Prevacid - B12, Vitamin D, Omega 3 and Iron suppliments. I take Levo @ 6.30 am - Prevacid around 9.00 am - and all the vitamins in the eve or late at night.  Prevacid is an acid inhibitor - so during the course of 10 years - looking at my blood work - i had to supplement the above mentioned Vitamins due course of time.  Recently i got diagonsed for open angle glaucoma and had laser surgery.
Reading all these posts is a great feeling - not alone.

Hi, I know your post is old, but today when I asked my endocrinologist about having to space out my Prevacid and Synthroid, he said you absolutely CAN take them together,,, AND..he told me that it doesn't matter what time of day. Also said that Synthroid does not have to be on an empty stomach.  He said there is WAY too much myth about Synthroid and what interrupts its effectiveness.  He said the ONLY thing that interferes with Synthroid is calcium and iron.  Just curious, are you still taking both of these meds?  How are you doing? Did you change how you take them?  I also just read tonight that green tea might be bad for Synthroid absorption. That is what I drink every morning.  hmmm... I just don't know WHAT to believe.  We are always told to 'ask our doctor'...but how can there be such a variance of answers?  I swear it is all just a matter of opinion and it seems we are forced to just average all the answers and go with what we think is best.  That is why they call the doctor profession a "practice" I guess. :-{  Take care!

I take Prilosec everyday and my doc told me to take it in the late afternoon, around 3 ish. After lunch is digested and at least an hour before dinner. Haven't had any problems. And I take my synthroid in the morning, wait and hour and then eat what I want.

I've had similar experience to what gimel noted.

When I felt hypo and on the hypo end of the lab range - acid reflux (awful at night) was one of the symptoms. In my case at least half of it is related to my thyroid. Lower tsh and raise T3 to the high end (actually a little past) and reflux goes away. I quit the PPI's altogether (tried all but prevacid in the past).  Low acid (yes the opposite) from being hypo can cause reflux.

To answer your question I took PPI's before bed, thyroid meds in morning.

Coffee will give me that feeling of reflux returning so I quit and changed to lemon tea, has less caffeine.

I eat fiber an hour after thyroid meds, Never heard of that being an absorption issue? I just stay clear of vitamin supplements in 4 hours.

It could well be related to the caffeine.  It could also be related to still being somewhat hypo.  Do you notice any other hypo symptoms?  Have you been tested for the biologically active thyroid hormones, FT3 and FT4?  If so, please post the results and reference ranges so that members can help interpret results.

I took Prevacid at 1:30 this morning, Synthroid at 6:30, non fiber breakfast at 8:30 and now at 9:30 I am having terrific stomach discomfort . This will dissapate as the morning goes by but have not yet discovered what is causing the distress that I did not have before doing anything.  Maybe it is the two cups of caffine???

I don't think my mouth is dry.  My experience is like there is a vapor of some sort coming up from my stomach into my mouth.  It is not painful, it is not heartburn, just something unpleasant.  At first I blamed it on my vitamin pill but it still happens on days void of vitamin pills.

I am suppose to put 4 hrs between Synthroid and any calcium, fiber and Prevacid.  Since I don't care to wait until 10:00 in the morning to have any food at all, I try to have non fiber foods for the first four hours.   Tomorrow I will go without the Prevacid completely and see what happens.

There is also the solution of taking the Prevacid when you wake and taking the T4 med before going to bed.
I tried that for a while as the T4 wasnt converting to T3 and it worked.
Food for thought.....

You have to spread the Prevacid out from food altogether I believe and then split it out again or concurrent with the Synthroid by some time.

I get a very dry mouth with the Prevacid.

I take my Prevacid when needed @ night right before bed.

I take Synthorid at 6:00AM and wait 1/2-1.0 hr before eating food.

Also Mylanta .. space that out too cause the meds won't absorb
