Synthroid and anxiety

Hello
I am currently on 37.5 of levothyroxine. I'm terribly undermedicated. Every time I try to up my meds, I have terrible anxiety attacks. Is there any idea why.  My levo is causing some itchy reaction, so I tried synthroid. I could not sleep and kept having anxiety attacks.  Is there a reason for this and how can I combat it? I will be taking levo lavoxly to see if it will help at all. Any suggestions will help. I'm also on 15 mcg of cytomel

Tsh .57
T4 .65 (.61-1.60)
T3 3.28

I don't have the ranges with me right now. I just remember my t4 because its so low. My symptoms are rapid heart rate, my sinuses won't heal, shakiness.
Thanks

i know this is an old thread but I noticed you had issues with itching. Where was your itching? mine generates in my ears and throat and at times I feel like I am itching from the inside of my body out. Every time I try to increase my ears itch so bad I could die....does it iease up. I tried synthroid cannot take it. Had a really bad reaction on one pill, so stuck with levothryroxine which I am not sure is aggravating my allergies or not..

I have done much better on Armour than I have on Levthyroxine and Synthroid, although that was more than likely caused by my conversion issues, which was discovered by goolarra when I sent her my lab results, I then asked my MD to put me on a combo medication, I opted for Armour rather than Cytomel, Only because I thought the MD's starting dose of Cytomel was too high for me, and since most here do well on Armour, I opted for it. I do not have any regrets, as far as my thyroid is concerned I beleive I am symptom free for the most part, I still have sleeping issues, but I have other issues involved in that.I am taking 3/4 of a 90 in the AM and 3/4 in the afternoon, but because of Hashi's progression that could change in the future.  Best of Luck FTB4

Hi
I have a question for you.  What dosage of medication are you taking? I'm just curious. I just started with levoxyl and the itching stopped but I feel like crap again. I am still so confused as to how to get to an optimal level. How long did it take to get to an optimal level?  I'm trying to hang in there.

Tirosint is a T4 only medication that is a gel cap and uses no filler or dyes.  That way if the reaction is to the fillers or dyes you are having it won't occur with the Tirosint medication.

Natural Dissected Thyroid medication such as Armour may also be a way to go as it has BOTH T4 and T3.

Sinus infections are common with people with low thyroid.  And seem to become less frequent or don't have problems with sinus after the thyroid levels are optimized for the person.  My daughter has had and always had sinus problems.  Got so bad and so chronic that she now I believe has permanent loss of sense of smell and not best sense of taste.  Her grand mother, and mother have Hypo.  I recently was able to get her to get a starter dose of Thyroid medicine.  I now wonder if underlying Hypo was not the problem all along and cause of her sinus problems.

I had that damn itching too, it drove me nuts!, I still get it once in a while even though my numbers are great with Armour. Take a 25 mg tab of Benadryl Allergy, the pink tabs (Diphenhydramine) its a Antihistamine
I take one in the evening to help me sleep, but they really help with the itching, they might make you a little sleepy so don't drive . They may help with the sinus issues also. If you get so bad on the T4 med, I could not offer much better advice than gimel, I would just refer to the MD that gimel advised. I myself would just take a higher dose of T4, but I do not have the same reaction you have, maybe you have an allergic reaction to the binders or fillers used in the medication itself. But at least try the Allergy med, its pretty generic and safe, it does not interfere with any thyroid meds, I checked for interactions and other than drowsiness, it is safe, And I think drowsiness is better thatn that damn itch lol. Take Care and good luck with your new MD   Best Regards FTB4

Hi
Yes I do split it. Half in the morning and the other around 12 noon. The cytomel has proven to be good and as you can see in my labs my t3 is good. I had the same problem even before cytomel. Anxiety with synthroid and itching with levo.  I know I need more t4, I just don't know how to go higher without side effects.  I'm wondering will the itching go away if I continue to go up, or can I take Xanax together through the anxiety?  I need more t4 even though my doc said my labs look great. I'm going to see a doctor on Tuesday that Gimel told me about. I can't wait. Also, I had these symptoms even before cytomel. Please let me know.

I think I asked you this already, but do you split your dosage of Cytomel, because it almost sounds like your T3 is spiking, causing hyper like symptoms. Either that or you are not letting your body adjust to the medication long enough, many who come on the forum ask the question if Synthroid or Levo can cause these symptoms, Most beleive that it is just the body getting used to the period of adjustment it needs to get used to the increase in hormones, you have been hormone deficient for a while and your body became accustomed to tha deficiency. When I used to take Levo when I was first diagnosed with Hashi's, my numbers never changed, so my MD put me on Synthroid, for three months I thought I was dying, I went through the same things as you, I even went to the emergency room once because I was shaking so bad. I don't know if this is the same thing you are going through or not, just an idea. If you don't split your dose of Cytomel, try splitting it between the morning and afternoon, I do that with my Armour also. Do you ahve a conversion issue? is that why you are on Cytomel?   Best Regards FTB4
