TSH 5.6 then 7.3

I went to the ER this past Thursday (Jan 31, 08) because I was suicidal.  When they checked my blood work, my TSH was 5.6 then later the next day they checked it again and it was 7.3.  I questioned my doctor but he said it could be stress related.  I explained to him that I had thyroid nodules bilaterally but I hadn't been to see my endocrinologist on the follow-up appointment yet and I asked if my being suicidal could be because of those levels.  I have all the other symptoms of hypothyroidism...depression, anxiety, chronic fatigued, (fibromyalgia), obese (hard to lose weight then quickly regain) etc.  Any advice?

It's going to take time to find the right medication and dose. Find a naturopath that will do a full thyroid panel and get the whole picture. Research in your area and read reviews. Just suggestions.

I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis and eating Paleo has really helped me with many bad symptoms of the disease, such as general pain in the body, constant gaining of weight, mental fog. It took me like a year and three months to lose 50 lbs but I did it with mainly diet alone. I know that is unremarkable for a normal person but with Hashimotos it is an accomplishment. I was at the point that not only could I not lose weight, I just kept gaining and gaining. It was horrible. But I feel better now. Still working on the low energy though, but exercise has helped with that.

Well riddle me this one batman!  I have had a TSH of .006 for one year until today.  I was diagnosed with a hyperthyroid.  My T4 at one point was 2.76 and then dropped back down to 1/10 point being over the maximum range in June.  Then today, go to the Endo after doing blood work on Friday and my TSH was 7.3 and my T4 was .89.  I am stressing over various things, could all of this come into play.

I HAVE JUST BEEN DIAGNOSD WITH THYROIDITIS AND PSVT OF THE HEART.

EVERY AFTERNOON AROUND 5PM I GET SO ANXIOUS THAT I WANT TO HURT MYSELF. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE FELT LIKE THIS I HAD THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS 2 YEARS AGO AND THE NURSES IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PUT ME IN A MENATL HEALTH HOSPITAL AS WELL AS ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT I WAS INSANE AND COULDNT FIGURE OUT WHY I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL EVERY NIGHT CRYING SHAKING AND BLABERING ON ABOUT NONSENSE.

I WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE MY THYROID CHECKED THEN BUT THEY NEVER DID IT. EVENTUALLY AFTER ABOUT 4 MONTHS THE HORRID FEELINGS OF ANXIETY ,RAPID HEART RATE, SWEATS, VOICES, AND ALL THE OTHER MUMBO JUMBO WENT AWAY

NOW I AM SUFFERING ALL OVER AGAIN WITH THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS. I HAVE BEEN PUT ON 2 DIFFERENT MEDICATIONS NOW OF WICH IVE BEEN ON FOR A WEEK, ONE TO SLOW MY HEART RATE AND THE OTHER TO CONTROLL THE THYROID.

PROBLEMS WITH THE THYROID ARE QUITE COMMON AND HAPPEN MORE FREQUENTLY IN WOMEN SO I HAVE BEEN TOLD

THE SUFFERING CAN BE QUITE SEVERE WEN YOU SUFFER FROM ANXIETY. I SUFFER FROM ANXIETY, I HAVE BEEN TOLD I HAVE MODERATE TO SEVERE ANXIETY WHICH DOES NOT HELP.

FOR SOME REASON I HAVE CREATED ALL THESE FEARS THAT I JUST CANT SEEM TO GET PAST. IM TERRIFIED OF BEING ON MY OWN, WHEN I USED TO LOVE IT. IM TERRIFIED OF THE TELIVISION BECAUSE I DONT KNOW IF WHAT IM SEEING IS REAL ESPECALLY WHEN ALL THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE IN PLACE. THE NEWS ON THE RADIO UPSETS ME BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY AND I HAVE OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCES WICH FRIGHTENS ME GREATLY, MY HUSBAND THREATENED ME WITH DIVORCE BECAUSE HE THOUGHT I WAS INSANE WITH ANXIETY.( BUT THAT WAS BEFORE HE FOUND OUT I HAD THYROIDITIS AND THAT IT COULD BE THE REASON FOR ALL MY ANXIETY)

A FEW WEEKS AGO ALL WAS FINE MY MARRIAGE WAS IN TOP SHAPE, I WALKED EVERYDAY, PLAYED WITH MY KIDS, EVERTHING WAS NORMAL IT NEVER BOTHERED ME AT ALL AND HAD NO IDEA I WAS GETTING SICK.

THE PASSING OF A FAMILY MEMBER WITH EXTENEDED FAMILY PROBLEMS, HAS TAKEN ITS TOLL ON ME, IT HAS CAUSED ALOT OF EMOTIONAL STRESS AND BAGGAGE, PERHAPS THAT BROUGHT IT ON.

I STILL NEED TO BE BOOKED INTO THE ENDOCRINOLOGIST BUT MY DOCTORS AWAY AND NO OTHER DOCTOR WILL SIGN ME UP TO ONE. WHICH IS ALL VERY FRUSTRATING IN ITSELF BECAUSE NOW I HAVE TO WAIT 3 WEEKS.

I STRESS ABOUT EVERYTHING NOW WHICH DOES NOT HELP ONE BIT.
BUT IM HOPING THINGS WILL COME TO AN END SOON. WHERE I WILL BE BACK TO NORMAL AND BE ABLE TO START BEING MYSELF AGAIN. NO MORE TEARS, FEAR, ANXIOUSNES AND HOSPITALS.

TRY AND STAY STRONG AND IF AT ANY TIME THINGS GET TO MUCH FOR YOU
TRY RINGING A HELP LINE OR VISIT A FRIEND WHO CAN HELP, SOMETIMES JUST HAVING SOMEONE LISTEN TO YOUR PROBLEMS OR TALKING ABOUT EVERYDAY STUFF CAN HELP.

IF YOU DO FEEL SUICIDAL GO TO YOUR HOSPITAL AND HAVE AN ASSESSMENT DONE BY THE PSYCHIATRIC NURSE, SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED THAT REASSURANCE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE OK.

Thanks for all the advice.  I went to my regular doc and they ran another check of my thyroid panel...TSH was now up to 8.27 and the T3 Uptake was now low at 28.4 with the Free T4 also low at 0.6.  She immediately got me on synthroid.

Thanks again for everything!!!!!  You are all in my prayers and please keep me in yours.

I'm so glad you went to the ER.  Yes, depression can be caused by your hormonal situation.  I think more people who are diagnosed with mental illness should have their thryoids checked.

You need to get your antibody levels checked because that could be causing the fluctuations.

Stay online and keep in touch.

Way Hypo thyroid and if you are "in the moment" with your feelings I bet - you really do not want to harm yourself.

You need to get regulated now. The ER is there to help you - but you need your regular physician notified immediately. Get in there. Get your tests and get moving on getting that thyroid balanced.

I hope once your blood work starts to level you off - I believe you will feel much better.

You are not alone.  I have had those same feelings more than one time.
I definetily know that the thyroid problems can make the depression and anxiety worse.  I am having problems with my anxiety and depression too.  I was diagnosised with Hashimotos and am hypothyroid.  It really is a hard to deal with all of this.  Just remember you are not alone and we are all here for you.  Lots of us are on here all hours of the night.  Insomnia is one of those things that comes along with all this thyroid stuff.
Just post or send messages and we will help as much as we can.
Prayers sent your way.

In my opinion, I think this is thyroid related. I had the anxiety, depression as well as insomnia that flipped me out so much I had a brief feeling of not wanting to be here anymore. My levels were 5.96 at the highest I know of.
I hope the endo puts you on meds. It helped me a lot.
Go with your gut.
