My TSH level was 5.35 before starting on the 50mcg of Levothyroxine. I didn't know to ask for anything else. Now I know about the Free T3 and T4. I also have gout which measured at 7.7 and was put on Allopurinol.
A "goiter" is inflammation (swelling) of the thyroid, so it just means that your thyroid (all over) is a bit enlarged. Many of us have goiter. Nodules are smaller overgrowths of tissue. They have a size and location.
Yes, it will be interesting to see what your labs are doing. You might also post your labs before you started meds so we can compare them.
Also, please tell us what meds you ae currently taking.
I did have the ultrasound. They found one goiter, no one told me the size of it, and I don't know what side it's on. My throat is sore, I have the cough off and on, swelling of my eyes and face, muscle pain, chest pain off and on, small amount of hair falling out, sluggishness, insomnia.
I just had my bloodwork done t wo days ago and should be able to get the results today or tomorrow. I will post including reference ranges. I had the dr check off the thyroid panel, lipid panel, and he is doing the bmp. He wanted to do just the tsh and bmp. When I pick up my results I also will be giving him the name and phone number of an endocrinologist I found yesterday. :)
The first test they might do is a thyroid ultrasound, which reveals the physical makeup of the thyroid. It will show a goiter (inflammation) or nodules. Many of us who are hypo have goiter and nodules. If nodules are small and not suspicious, they're usually just monitored for changes.
It can take more than 8 weeks on meds before the thyroid shrinks. Have you had follow-up bloodwork since starting meds? Very frequently, the initial dose is not the correct dose. We have to have further bloodwork and re-evaluate symptoms before reaching an ideal dose.
If you have bloodwork, please post and include reference ranges because these vary lab to lab and have to come from your own lab report.
How are your other hypo symptoms doing?
