Thyroid Surgery

I have a hyperthyroid with Multinodular goiter. For the last year I have had several thyroid storms which felt like I was dying. I am now on a beta blocker and Tapazole to help control the symptoms . I feel like I am going crazy all the time. I am very emotional. I am exhausted. I am so weak now I can barely function. This is no life!! I am miserable. I am told by my Doctor that I need to have my thyroid removed. I keep hearing and reading about how horrible people feel and weight gain they have after having this done. My question is this...Does anyone feel better from having their thyroid removed?

I'm wondering how long you've been on the tapazole (and the dose) and what your current blood tests are?

I had a toxic nodule and went on low dose carbimazole and started turning hypo within 5 weeks.   (after crying on my doctor, he guessed and ran more tests).    The carbimazole also enabled me to stop taking the betablocker as my heart-rate stabilised.    Anti-thyroid meds are accumulative...

I had RAI - my hormones were normal for almost a year and I'm now going through the adjustment on synthroid.

I had a TT almost 18 yrs ago due to graves/hyper/toxic goiter. I too had the thyroid storms. I had one a month after RAI, they finally took my thyroid out due to getting down to 88 lbs & middle of my second thyroid storm.

I STILL work 40hrs a week; my son is now 18 & still all the house hold chores like I never had any issues.

I won't say I did not gain weight right after, but once my level was regulated the weight went back to normal for my height. I am currently underweight, but its just the way my metabolism is, I do eat as healthy as I can though. Sometimes NOT....

I have been throught the dosage issues in the last 5yrs, but like I said, still work & do house hold chores. I do have insomnia, & did end up with thyroid eye disease. (my eyes bulge slightly).

Currently on 175mcg Levothyroxine. I know it is too much due too my HR being between 95-15 at rest, but my endo said she will re test in mid June. The heart rate does not bother me though.

I had my removed in february.  Woke up from the surgery and couldn't even tell anything was even done.   In between asking the nurse for drugs (why not)  I ate a turkey sandwich and 3 chocolate ice creams.   I went home the next day.  30 days later My hormone level took a nosedive, but literally within a week of me raising my dose i felt better.  I can swallow now, i don't have the pain i had before.   I feel no worse than before the surgery.  If asked, id have to say i feel better.  I still have a long ways to go, but for example today i went to work out, went to the pool, played with my kids, and I'm still on here reading and typing.

I had my thyroid removed 6 years ago (Graves).  It was the best thing I ever did for my health.  I, too, was on Tapazole and a beta blocker, and was overly emontional.  I had one adjustment on Synthroid and have been holding rock solid on my levels ever since.  I feel great.  I have put on some weight, but I have always struggled with my weight, so I can't just blame the lack of thyroid.
