Thyroid meds causes Osteoporsis??

I just went for a Dexa-Scan for my Osteoporsis. The technician looked at my med list and asked if I am taking Boniva and Synthroid. I answered yes. I take other meds other than those two she mentioned. I told her that I understood why she asked about the Boniva but I didn't understand why she asked about Synthroid. She told me that thyroid meds take from the bones and causes osteoporosis. WHAT??? How come no doctor ever told me?

I just got a copy of my written Dexa Scan report. In large print it says:

"CLINICAL INDICATION: OSTEOPOROTIC, MENOPAUSAL, SYNTHROID"

What's with the Synthroid?

I just read to article.

"Thyroid hormone does not cause bone loss, it simply increases metabolism and therefore the rate of the current bone formation or loss. Most older women are losing bone due to their combined sex steroid, DHEA, Vitamin D, and growth hormone deficiencies. The solution is not life-long hypothyroidism, but the correction of their other deficiencies".

What is DHEA?

Thanks!

That technician should get her facts straight, and also stop giving out medical advice that should come from the doctor.   I suggest that you take the time to read this article, written by a good thyroid doctor, to send to patients that have been consulting with him from a distance.  The letter is sent to the PCP of the patient, to help guide treatment.  I think you will find paragraph 4 to be very insightful for you on this subject.
