Thyroid

I've had a subtotal thyroidectomy and have gained unwanted weight. I take 100 MCG of Levoxyl daily. Among other things I assume you know this regulates my metabolism. Eating a healthy diet & smaller portions has not allowed me to lose this added weight. What can I do?

With those symptoms, I would call and press for earlier testing, instead of waiting until the end of March.  When you go back for next testing, request that they check the biologically active thyroid hormones, free T3 and free T4 (not total T3 and total T4).  If the doctor resists or makes excuses as to why it is not necessary just insist on FT3 and FT4 and don't take no for an answer.  Keep in mind that you are the customer.

Do not let them get by with testing for only TSH. TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many variables that it is inadequate as the sole diagnostic for thyroid problems.

When results are available, make sure to get a copy, and then post results and reference ranges here and member will be glad to help interpret. Keep in mind that I think you are going to have to look for a good thyroid doctor.  What area are you in?

Join the diet thread we posted here and attempt that. It could help.

Also you need to make sure you are "optimal" with labs and meds to make sure your body is still not hypothyroid.

The other symptoms I have are definite loss of hair, dry hair, some memory loss, and depression. I'm taking Wellbutrin XL, but that's to help me focus on handling the affairs of my Mom who has dementia and also the affairs of my handicapped brother.  A little overwhelming.  I'm 65 yrs old, working full time and went through a nasty divorce at 60, so I don't think the depression has anything to do with the thyroid problem.  I'm due to have blood work at the end of March to check my TSH again.  Usually that is done only once a year, but my endocrinologist wasn't happy with my last test, which was about 4 months ago.  I think the only think that is tested is the TSH.  I will be back in touch after I have the next test results.

The very most important thing for you to do is find a good thyroid doctor that will treat you clinically by testing and adjusting levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, free T3 and free T4, with meds as necessary to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by resultant TSH levels.  Symptom relief should be all important, not test results, or dosage of meds.

If you look through the listing of hypo symptoms in this link, do you have any others besides the weight issue?

Also, please post results from your thyroid tests, and also reference ranges shown on the lab report so that members can assess your testing and results.
