Treatment

Hi I have a question regarding a underactive thyroid. I got blood work done last november, and went back to see my doctor in march. I had to ask him how my results were and thats when he told me my thyroid was underactive. My father also has a underactive thyroid and takes a pill every day. Now when the doctor told me about the underactive thyroid he gave me another blood test and I still havent heard back from him. Do I need medication like my father takes everyday for this? I always feel tired. bad memory and I dont know what I should do, If I should see another doctor about this, or if I need medication. Im a 22 year old male, also my father was diagnosed with hypothyroid when he was 28. Thanks alot!!! really appreciated.

I have an underactive thyroid or did until I had a total thyroidectomy in 2006 from the formation of a goiter.  I take Synthroid and have since 2001 everyday.

You are more than likely hypothyroid (underactive).  Yes, as patient rights you are entitled to a copy of your test results.  That is a law everywhere.

Hey, stella thanks for the reply. Nope this guy isnt my fathers doctor. I believe he said my thyroid was "underactive but not that bad" or something along them lines.. am i aloud to get a copy of the blood results? When I was at his office I tried to see what the level was I think it was 6. something not too sure though. but even if your thyroid is underactive even by a little arent they supposed to give you medication just not at a high amount? thanks alot again!

I really think you have a very inconsistant doctor. Proper protocol after being Dx w/ hypoT is medication prescribed (usually Synthroid) and blood test every 6 to 8 weeks - until you are leveled.- --just him verbally telling you - that you are hypothryroid and sending you on your way is unexceptable. Is this the physician your father is seeing too?

Do you have a copy of your tests? Post them as they read.

CAll the office and tell the doctor you feel like cr@p. If he doesn't inform you of anything - and.......... after you post your last blood work up here - and it seems that you should be having treatment - wave bye-bye to this doctor and get a good one!
