Welbutrin XL 300 Cytomel 15 and Synthroid 125

I am 51 yrs old 2 yrs ago I had my thyroid removed 5 tumors... so they removed the thyroid and trie to keep the parathyroid but damage was done to them and they are not working based on lab results.....they gave me 150 mg of synthroid or should I say the generic name Levothyroioxine I think something like that anyway I felt like I was in a fog l could not concentrate on my work so the Dr. decided to add cytomel 15 mcg...I was experiencing mood swings uncontrollable crying and nightmares... I gained about 5 pounds more with this drug ( I swear it made me hungrier than normal) ...so my Dr. adds Welbutrin XL 300 mg to regulate my mood and help with the crying jags I guess ...now I am experiencing insomnia, trembling hands, ringing in the ears and instead of helping I am getting awfully agitated at times....someone please help!! I feel like I am on a roller coaster... I just started the 300 mg of Welbutrin XL maybe I should give it some time....what do you think! I am also on Vitamin D3 1000  a day and Calcium 1000 a day and multivitamin....I take the Welbutrin at Bedtime because I take the synthroid and cytomel in early am and take vitamins after dinner.....any suggestions.....

I had some of your symptoms before I was put on a combination of levothyroxine and Cytomel. I was extremely depressed and having non-stop panic attacks. My starting dose was 75 mcg. generic Levothyroxine and 25 mcg. Cytomel......this stopped the depression and panic attacks within 3 days, when no anti-depressant (including Wellbutrin) helped at all.  I now take 100 mcg. levo and 50 mcg. Cytomel, and just raised the Cytomel by 12 and 1/2 mcg without experiencing the symptoms you describe.. The dosage is highly individual and depends on where your levels are in the FREE ranges.

Because my TSH was "normal" (but NOT for me, now it's below .01 and I feel better) of course all the endos insisted my weight gain and agitation and hair loss and inability to think reflected a psychological problem. I went to a psychiatrist who put me on and off totally unnecessary anti-depressants. I must have taken every one when all I needed was T3. Of ALL the psychotropics I was given, Wellbutrin was the WORST and gave me exactly the same  reaction that you're experiencing. I couldn't stop shaking or vomiting, etc. It was a terrible experience and I slept one entire night curled on the floor around the toilet bowl. I couldn't walk, I had to crawl. You should read about Wellbutrin online......it is one of the hardest anti-depressants to stop taking and is well-known to be "speedy". I don't recommend it.

Hang in there. I wouldn't change the thyroid meds until after you have your labs done if they're scheduled soon. I get ringing in my ears when I am under-medicated.

We need to see your lab results for Free T4 and Free T3.

It sounds to me like you may be HYPER.  not Hypo.

15 mcg of Cytomel is a huge amount.  Most people can't handle even jumping to 5 mcg let alone 15 micrograms.

Ringing of ears, high appetite, inability to sleep jittery hands & anxiety are all signs consistent with being Hyper.  although weight gain is more common with low thyroid.

I think there is a possibility that you are over medicated.  My recommendation would be to cut down on your Cytomel.  This is a fast acting drug so you should feel some change fairly quickly.  I t could also be a side effect of the amount of Cytomel.  That is a HUGE jump 7 your body is shocked. You may need more time to adjust or to work your way up.

I would discuss this and what you are feeling with your Dr.
