adrenaline

does anyone have adrenaline surges? I have been having these at night for 2 years now. After talking with a relative, found out what it is. MD has put me on a beta blocker. Diagnosed about 8 weeks ago with hypothyroidism. treated with armour thyroid. Thanks for the input.

It's not anxiety, it is adrenaline. I had these for a year. They cause vasoconstriction, resulting in cold spots or numbness in areas on the body. My worst spots were my thigh and upper arms. Because the numbness was so bad originally, they sent me for an MRI and a neurologist. It got better with time and by getting my thyroid levels in the optimal range. Thyroid and adrenaline (epinephrine) have an inverse relationship - low thyroid = high adrenaline.

It's a repair of the adrenals so they can produce proper levels of cortisol. If that can not be done then a HC replacement Rx needs to be Rx'd

Well magnesuim citrate works the best - but I have been taking the GNC magnesuim lately.

I still however have to get more cortisol up more in the AM - that is what is causing my surge in the am right now.

Stella,
Thanks for commenting. What particular form of magnesium did you use? How much Vit C? One more thing, do adrenal supports really work.

I have the panics all night long which is killing me.

I will be asking the dr to run an adrenal test on me.

Adrenal surges can be confused with panic and most doctors do not ecknowledge adrenal fatigue as a problem. The norm is is stick the patient on Xanax or ?? and ride it out.

A cortisol test would be your best bet to really figure out the reason for the distress.  There is blood work available tosee if you test low on cortisol - but the gold seal of testing would be a 24 hr saliva test - that most likely you would have to pay for.

I was a Xanax user for 6 yrs until I found a physician that looked at my adrenals. You guessed it----- I am/was suffereing from severe adrenal fatigue.

Yes I am supplementing.... Vit C - magnesium and Immune support.

I hated Xanax and I gained a horrible amount of weight from hypoT and adrenal fatigue.  I still get surges at certain times of the month and at very stressful times - but they are better than panicing all day long.

Thank you so much for getting back to me.

The dr has given me xanax. but even that hasn't helped. That has made me wonder whether or not it is panic attacks since it did not help.

I live with a husband and 2 sons, and they are no support at all, which does not help.

I did buy some adrenal herbal treatment, so I will give that a shot. The guy at the herb store gave me some kava kava to try.

Have you ever had any luck with herbal treatment?

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Hi again, I don't think I fully answered your question.  The thyroid medicine takes 4-6 weeks to become stable in your system.  Then it can take a while longer for some symptoms to go away.  I would say, if your anxiety is caused by low thyroid, it should go away. (give it a couple months)  If it doesn't then perhaps your thyroid medicine needs to be "fine tuned", or the anxiety could be a symptom of something else going on.  I think some people just have anxiety problems with no underlying illness.  In that case,  I guess they try to beat it on their own or go on medicine for it.
Good luck,

Hi.  I dealt with panic attacks in the past.  I am almost positive they were caused by a huge cut in my Synthroid.  I read up on them and learned that they manifest by fear.  The more you fear them, the more they sneak up on you, and the worse they get.  Fearing another attack is going to happen will cause another attack to happen.  You need to actually get them out of your mind, forget about them.  Make them a thing of the past.  Make it something you do not think of everyday.  You think about dinner and brushing your teeth everyday, but do you think about the time you fell off your bike and skinned your knees when you were 10?  No, I'll bet you don't.  That's what you got to do with this "thing".  (At least, this is what I had to do, and I'll admit it was really hard).  You need to learn ways of calming and relaxing yourself.  Another thing I did, was kept really really busy with friends and family.  Being around others helped.  I also read that the worst thing to do is to keep this to yourself.  Tell your close friends and family what you are going through and you should feel somewhat better immediately. It's a horrible thing, and I hope you can overcome it without medicine.   One more thing I can suggest is chamomile tea.  Also, stay away from coffee.  Coffee made my anxiety so much worse.  The tea has a sedative effect.  It works pretty well. You can get it pretty much anywhere.  It may make you sleepy, so I would find out how much you can handle before downing 4 cups in the morning before work.
I know that some people who have anxiety problems, have low adrenals.  Ask your doctor to do the ACTH, along with a 24 hour urine test, and an A.M. cortisol.  This should determine if your adrenals are working as they should.  Ask your doctor to take your blood pressure while laying down, then again immediately when you stand up. This is a quick test for your adrenals also.
Hope some of these suggestions will help.
Hang in there-

Karly, I have wondered if it could be anxiety. However, it seems to be perpetuating itself. I hate to take xanax but after 2 years, I need something.

According to my last lab values, my thyroid is in a good range. Do you have any idea how long it will be before this stops?

Thanks for your response.

I think you are speaking of anxiety...(?)  Some people with low thyroid have it, and other's get panic attacks.  They are symptoms of hypothyroidism, and should go away when the thyroid problem is corrected.
Hope I answered your question-
