graves disease

I have been on Tapazole for 3 weeks, I broke out with horrible hives a couple days ago. My doctor first told me to stay on the Tapazole and take Benadryl, but it was so severe I could barely function. So finally she said to take a break form the Tapazole. I don't know what to do switch to PTU or try the Tapazole at a lower dose. I have also read that the breakout of hives could mean my levels have come down or are to low. Any advice would be appreciated.

My daughter had the same reaction to Tapazole and has been on PTU for the past five years and is doing great on it. Good luck!

Hives do not indicate high or low thyroid hormone levels.

PTU might be worth trying if you are having an allergic reaction to Tapazole. Methimazole would probably produce the same reaction, as it is the generic form of Tapazole.

Carbimazole metabolizes into Methimazole after you take it.
I don't know if it would produce a similar reaction, but it might be worth trying.

A lower dose sounds like grasping at straws. You have only been on the drug for a few weeks, so you don't know if the dose you were taking is correct or not. Regardless, if you are having an allergic reaction to the drug, a lower dose would still produce a reaction, I would think.

I would ask to try a different drug.
