how bad is this?

my doctor seemed a bit concerned when she showed me my results. are these results that bad?

TSH = 0.005
FT3 = 8.8  (i remembered the normal range is around 2.3-4.2)
FTG = 1-92

i've been sweating excessively for the past 1-2 months, which is completely abnormal for me. occasionally i'll feel a bit jittery or my hands will shake, but that's not even on a daily basis. my weight has been stable, as have been my eating habits (i like to eat). so the only discomfort has been the sweating.

my pcp immediately prescribed atenolol (25 mg) for me to take daily until i see the endocrinologist. she also performed an EKG, which was normal.

do i need to be really worried?

Congrats on your up coming marriage!

Weight is going to do what's its going to do. Meds. have no influence on weight either way.
If you lost any weight due to Graves' you will probably gain that back after RAI.
I think weight might be influenced by being hypo but way hypo, like a very high TSH. However you should be put on meds way before that happens as long as you get levels check regularly after RAI and med. dose levels, like every 4 weeks until you do reach levels for meds.  We are not all alike, so nothing is a 100% guarantee.

Good Luck!

thank you both for your comments and support! =)

does going on thyroid medication cause weight gain? i know this sounds completely self-centered, but it's something i'm truly worried about. i'm getting married next march, and i've already got my wedding dress. i'm afraid it might not fit. are there some things i should actively watch for to help prevent weight gain? or are there some medications that are better than others?

Your levels do suggest Graves' and uptake/scan will confirm. Then you will need to make a decision on treatment. All my family are hypos, I'm the only Graves, unless there is one from eons ago hiding in the wood pile. ;)

Good luck- you will be just fine.

i apologize for my typos in the initial post. it was FT4 = 1.92 (not FTG).

i saw the endo for my first consult, and she scheduled a thyroid uptake scan (nuclear med test) for next week. she's guessing it's graves since i have a first cousin who has hyperthyroidism as well. i guess we'll see? she said the nuc med scan should pinpoint the cause.

thank you both so much for your comments!! it's good to know that it can be treated relatively easily. i managed to get an appt slot with the endo for tomorrow, so we'll hopefully find out what's causing it.

the sweating has really been the only thing that's bugging me. occasionally shaking/trembling of the hands, but that's about it. i've been reading up online to see what else to look for. my optimistic self is hoping for something as easy as thyroiditis, but we'll see. *shrugs shoulders*

my sweating has calmed down a bit too, where it doesn't happen every day. i've had 3 relatively sweat-free days so far, so i'm hopeful it will continue. =)

thank you again for your comments!

You're definately hyper.  Do you not have any other symptoms?  If you don't you are one of the very lucky.  I wasn't. I had Graves' Disease and had every single one of them.  I agree with tm514, sounds like you are on the right track.  Also sounds like they caught it early which is a very good thing.  Welcome aboard!

Hello,

Your lab results and your symptoms point to hyperthyroidism.  SInce you already have an appointment with an endocrinologist, you are on the road to figuring out what the cause is.  In the meantime, try to google "hyperthyroidism" on the internet - I liked the information I found at mayoclinic.com, as it helped settle me down a lot when I had questions similar to yours.

Hyperthyroidism can be treated relatively easily.  I don't want to say don't worry, as hyperthyroidism, left untreated, can lead to big health problems.  Sounds like you are headed in the right direction.  Good Luck!
