new mom just diagnosed with hyperthyroid and worried about breastfeeding

Hi there, I have a newborn baby that is almost 6 months and am happily breastfeeding her, but for a few months I have been losing weight and having heart palpitations and feeling very cruddy overall, went to the dr who found out that I have a hyperthyroid. Currently not on any medication because we just found out. My concern is mainly for my baby, will the extra hormone go into my breastmilk and affect her thyroid or heart?? I am only breastfeeding her and she hasn't taken to a bottle.

Also, can i try to manage this holistically through acupuncture and chinese medicine in combination of western treatment. Having a hyper thyroid has hit me like a brick wall since I've been pretty healthy my whole life. I'm 37 and want to stay healthy for my new daughter and also look forward to having another baby in the near future. So, this is kind of hard...

Thx everyone,
I don't know what the doctor will prescribe for me, he mentioned beta blockers for the heart palpitations but I'm having a few more tests done to check if I have Grave's disease.

Anyone approach this holistically with acupuncture, diet, lifestyle changes in combination with western medicine? I am going to do this as well.

Hi,
I was recently diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and was hesistant to take the meds b/c of my concern for the baby now and after as well as for my 3 year old that I still breastfeed (day-time only). I have been assured by one of the ladies on the site that it is safe to take PTU while pregnant and nursing. She recommended that should I need the meds after delivery I have the baby's thryoid re-checked periodically. I also spoke with our children's pediatrician and he also advised me that it was safe and that he would test the baby and my 3 year old in couple of months. Good luck!

No the extra thyroid medication will not go to the baby. It is only usuable in YOUR body and thyroid. Thousands of women have breastfeed their babies whilst taking thyroid medication and the babies are fine.
You try the extra help, but ultimately you will need thryoid hormones to help you. The acupuncture etc is something I do too, and I know it helps me to relax and cope with my hyper symptoms. It is not a replacement though for the medication.
It is best to feel well and get it sorted now, because believe me, when your little darling starts walking you are gonna need every bit of energy you have!
