surgery?

I saw my Dr. yesterday and he made the statment that if I continue to swing between hypo and hyper I will have to remove my thyroid gland to stabelize on med's.. I know I have read here where people wait until the thyroid just burns out, which my dr said that could take year's.. I have only went hyper once since starting  med's in 6-08 I  know I was hyper before starting med's and was swinging back and forth I just did not know what was happening. I do have hashimotos and antibiodies are over 30,000 which the dr. seem's to be concerned about. so what is the best option? and what do high antibiodies do to you? I am on 50 mcg of levothyroxine having to build up very slowly because of being so sensitive..I am allergic to almost everything. tsh was in the 90's 3 weeks ago.

Not that I want to talk anyone into this type of surgery, because it's no light-weight matter either.  But since it (and I almost hate to make this claim) I've had some of my allergy-like symptoms and sensitivity to things be lifted.  However, I do need to say I also had surgery for parathyroid disease at the same time - so I'm not sure if I can exactly pin-point the cause and effect issue there.

That's all more mumbo-jumbo than you need to hear right now but...FWIW.

Good luck.

That is a tough call Pat....strickly up to you and your doctor. My thyroid continually developes nodules on my one side and I have wished numerous times that I would have had it removed when suggested.....and it kind of makes sense what your doctor is suggesting....but surgery is surgery. Wish I was of more help but it really is a personal decision for you and your dr. Actually your doctor seems like he is thinking outside of the box and may be on to something! Let us know what you decide! :)
Hashimoto's can be a very long ride as the antibodies destroy your thyoid. As this happens it means you constantly have to check levels....get increases.....develop hypo symptoms......get sick.....feel better.....get sick.....feel better.....ugh....it can be a long nasty cycle, BUT once the thyroid fails it should mean we feel better once our body has a chance to heal properly after we have maintained optimum levels over a period of time. The most important thing is to have a doctor who understands hashi's and it sounds like you have a great one!
