uncaring docs and thyroid nodules

Why don't doctors care at all about my 8+ thyroid nodules, some calcified, pedunculated, hipoechoic etc. largest has grown to 2cm.  I can't even get a throat/neck scope.  Doc wouldn't look at tests or examine me, just said it's all acid reflux. I asked if not cancer then? he said dunno!  having issues with my voice, breathing, swallowing and many hypo symptoms. I can't find anyone to help me.  have known about nodules 12years. fna in 2000 was inconclusive.  what to do?

I'd be curious to know the reaction of your internist when you told him about the ENT.

Your internist can order the U/S and any blood tests that might need to be done. Only thing he can't do is a throat scope, but not sure how that would help with thyroid issues/nodules.  A naturopath may not be able to order certain tests, depending on laws in your state.

Yeah I just let it go since 2000.  Docs didn't seem too concerned so I wasn't concerned.  Guess I've made it this long so must not be cancer?  Anyway, my internist wanted a throat scope and review of US he ordered so sent me to an ENT.  That visit was 90 seconds.  he didn't know who I was, why I was there, didn't have or review my US and didn't even feel my neck while swallowing which seems the normal thing they do.  He said is acid reflex and no need for anything further, see internist in a year.   I was shocked, assumed they'd want a FNA since it's been so long and all those scary words were in my US.  He said no. I said "oh, then there's no chance it's cancer"? He said "I don't know that".  If it is, is slow growing.  HELLO it's been 12 years!  Won't go back to him that's for sure.  I told my internist so maybe he doesn't recommend that jerk to anyone else.  So, I will try a naturopath next.  At least she may help me with hypoT symptoms.

You haven't had an FNA biopsy for 12 years? You need to press for an FNA.  It may or may not tell you more, but worth doing.

See another doctor for further evaluation.

Ultrasound results that may increase the risk for cancer include hypoechoic; microcalcifications; solid content; increased blood flow; chaotic pattern of  blood vessels; irregular borders; a taller than wide thyroid nodule; absent or irregular halo.

Risk factors for thyroid cancer include: a history of neck irradiation; male; family history of thyroid cancer; age - under 20 or over 60; rapid nodule growth; enlarged lymph nodes in the neck; hoarse voice; difficulty swallowing; nodule is of a firm and hard consistency; margins of the nodule are ill defined; nodule is attached to surrounding structures in the neck.
