The only person in my family who has been supportive is my aunt who lives in KC.  LONG ways away.  But even she got tired of listening to me after a while so it wasn't that long lived.  I understand how you feel.  Aren't we lucky to have found this forum?  Couldn't make it without it.

If they treated you that badly, and I know how they acted about your brother, how are they treating him now?  He is so young and can't really fight back, can he?  He is so blessed to have a sister who will do his fighting for him.

God bless you, skymax.

Tell your sister that thyroid problems are hereditary and she could have to go thru brain fog just like you!

Was your family supportive?

My family made fun of everything so I just don't talk to them about any health issues. I got tired of them saying -- Oh, it must be thyroid. I snapped at my sister once and told her -- You have no f*ing idea!

That's a perfect description. It's like reality is on the other side of this thick fog. You know it's there but you can't focus on it and it's physically draining to try.

AR- could not have said it better myself.

This is my comparison of brain fog to foggy weather-
If you've ever woken up on a foggy weather day and cannot even see your car parked outside- that is what your brain is like- you can't focus outside your body. As the sun rises the fog burns off just like when your body begins to adjust to the medicinal therapy the brainfog slowly burns off and you can focus a little further outside your body.

i hope that makes sense!?!  i can see bit further outside today!

Thanks Dac. I liked AR-10 description, too "Normal thought process get short circuited and what you think is perfectly logical is not. You get confused when trying to make simple decisions. Suddenly you don't always trust your own judgment". Things get a little fuzzy mentally."

So do others kind of go crazy or feel like they are? I have told my husband that I cannot make decisions or most of the time, can't think at all. My system has been so messed up and because I mentioned the brain fog thing to an expert in thyroid (she is an endocrinologist and internist) she wanted me to visit a neurologist:( I just got disgusted with the whole thing and just stopped taking my meds on Sept. 1 and I am amazed at how great I feel in these 6 days. I am actually cleaning house. I am having trouble with my eyes feeling weird and a few other quirks. My tsh was 0 and I assume I might be paying for this in another week or so but I have gone off my meds before. When I went off synthyroid in 2001 or 2 for 2-3 months, I couldn't even feel any different no change at all. Armour worked for one week end of March but before and after, I went crazy and things just went downhill. I felt not so bad when my tsh was 0 but had no energy. Wish I could find someone who could figure this all out.

AR-10 ---great descriptioin!  Once you've had it you will never forget it.  Makes you feel like an idiot!

Janssnakes--you got it.  Welcome aboard.

Mary---reminds me of in our church, if we can't pronounce a name or can't think of one, know every one knows who we're talking about anyway, we say "Moses"!  Works wonderfully.

Brain fog to me is just being not being able to think clearly. If I try to do math or something that requires thinking, my system goes crazy and I fell like I am losing my mind---or is this something else?

One more note...

I read this description to my Mom (77-y-o) and she said she feels this way too.  We are always "filling in the blank" for each other while carrying on a conversation and sometimes we get so distracted trying to guess the right word that we forget what we were talking about.

After reading this description, we've agreed that we will just insert the word "car door" anytime we can't pull up the right term we are searching for - indicating that we can't remember the word but are going ahead without it.  I think it will be a great help for us and a beautiful "inside joke."  Thanks!

Well put.  Perfect description of "Brain Fog."

We are not the only ones who use this term to describe the symptom associated with hypothyroid - I've seen it on the "thyroid.org" website and in papers written by M.D.s.  I don't know of a better term to use to describe how it feels and you've done a masterful job of describing the symptoms!

Thanks - I'm printing it out to give to my family members who still don't get it.

Poor memory. You forget half the stuff you are told soon after hearing it.

Reduced ability to store and retrieve information. See above.

You forget what things are called, like a car door or an alligator clip.

When you sit and visit with three people it becomes physically exhausting trying to be part of the conversation. Too many things going on at once and when you have something to say you might go blank in mid sentence.

You walk into a room and then wonder what you are going after or why you went there. You forget what day of the week it is. You forget your grandson's name. You forget that you have to put the car in reverse if you want to back up.

You forget.

Normal thought process get short circuited and what you think is perfectly logical is not. You get confused when trying to make simple decisions. Suddenly you don't always trust your own judgement.

Things get a little fuzzy mentally.

I think.
