Terrible thing to go through. Things like that really shake your faith in the medical community at times.
So what was the diagnosed cause for your hypothyroidism? Was it primary (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis), or central (dysfunction in the hypothalamus/pituitary system?
What thyroid med and dosage are you taking now daily?
Please post your last few sets of thyroid related test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report.
Hi my name is Pam Dufresne, I'm free on Maine. I was in a myexadema back in 2007 I think. Thyroid was 179.9, I was days from dying. I blew up to 250 pounds from 130. I hurt all the time and I cried every morning getting ready for work.
I could barely walk but I kept pushing. The doctors said I was going through medepause. I wasn't. People thought I was drunk, because I slured my speech. I was almost fired.
When I went to the hospital for the 6th time, the doctor I had seen several times, said I told you there is nothing we can do. I had my daughter with me.
I didn't answer right away, I didn't know I was doing that either, and I cried, I asked my daughter if she thought I was missing my mind. She said no mom your not.
She left the room and had a word with that doctor, as this was happening an older doctor came in for his shift and over heard my daughter telling the other doctor that somethings very wrong.
So, the older doctor came in and imediately knew. I had no neck, I was having trouble breathing, etc. Other things to. The older doctor had my daughter go get a picture of me, once he saw it he knew.
To make a long story short, he said in should be dead. Also that the treatment could kill me. My family was called, but I pulled through.
I lost a lot of my memory, most of it. I have gotten better but still a have medical issues, a lot. That's why I came on this site, I was hoping to find out what I have to look forward to. From what I have read, more of the same. I get sick very easy and I was injured at work, now I'm disabled. In short I have never really recovered from it.
Any information would be great. Thanks Pam Dufresne.
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 12 years ago when I was pregnant with my second child. I have been taking .125 mg since..but I have no insurance(to go to doctor to get a new prescription) and since have not been able to get/take my levothyroxine in about 6 weeks. For over a week now I am having heart palpatations, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, bad cough, my limbs feel like jelly, my face and eyes look yellowish and sallow, I can't eat more than a piece of a day, I am so weak that I usually have to hang onto the wall to go to the bathroom, diareah, bad hot/cold flashes (but mostly freezing all the time), hot/cold sweats, nausea, these are just the worse symptoms. Now I'm not sure what to do. I was wondering if any of these symptoms could be related to something else. And also now I'm affraid to go to the ER because I have 4 children and I'm scared they will make me stay in the hospital. Any help would be much appreciated...
You had it pretty bad, I am glad you came through. I had the coma myself but got treated prior to hospitalization. My organs had shut down for the most part, swelling extreme, hair loss, gray skin, brain impairment. No bathroom number 2 for 10 days was the norm. This all happened around 14 years ago. There is life after this for those who survive it, and I am guessing, young enough. I can tell you this, it is fight or flight. The swelling issues remained for years, now they seem to have gone in the last couple of years since the newer norms were set...all that time I felt symptomatic only to be conditioned to it, then suddenly I was correct after all and my dosage tripled...now the swelling is gone. I don't understand why it is common practice to keep sufferers on a low norm in the first place, quality of life is not considered.
Now dawn, Myxedema in your case is swelling, why your doctor says you will always have that. It is a symptom and should be treated.
I have Hashimotos, an auto immune disease attacking my thyroid like a bacteria, not recognizing its killing me. My blood results show I am inflamed, autobodies are high, I would like to find out how not just to treat my low thyroid, but to stop the autobodies and stop the progression of the problem. Hang strong, get a doctor that treats your symptoms not just goes by numbers from the lab.
OMG..im so sorry to hear this, that is terrible, what a horrible thing to have to go through..I have Myxedema but i was lucky not to go into a comma. My doctor said on my last visit you will always have myxedema it wont go, so i really dont know to be honest on what will be your recovery time or how much health you will regain..I hope someone will know more on this for you..Sorry i cant offer you any encouragement but wanted to wish you well with this xx
