I was sent an artical containing this text. quote..Thyroid disease, particularly hypothyroidism, has been on the rise in recent years. Dr. Blanchard suggests that environmental toxins may inhibit production of thyroid hormone, noting that dental x-rays (where the thyroid is improperly shielded) and toxic chemicals are possible culprits. Also, age itself can be a factor, he says: "As our metabolic and immune systems slow down, we're more prone to infection and immune disease, both of which can manifest as hypothyroidism."  Unquote...My Thyriod levels dropped about a week after having a number of x-rays for removing two amalgam fillings from my teeth. Does the body repair the damage to the thyriod after dental work  or do we loss the cells forever after dental xrays. All I was provided was a cover in the form of a pinafore to cover my chest and body. Why aren't dentist told to cover us up completely...

I don't know if you are in  America or here in australia but most of the dentists my family use are dentists who do not have  thyriod shields they still use the big plastic cover to the shoulders only. I also had a complete mouth xray about 6 months back and was never given a shield for my neck area. A girlfriend of mine queried the amalgam fillings some years back and they removed them all for nothing paid for by some fund set up by the Dental Association here in Australia. That was over 8 years ago and now my friend has no thyriod she had treatment after treatment until finally last year she had to have them totally removed and has to take medication for the rest of her life.Why would they do that if there wasn't a problem. There is also specialists dentists here that specialise in removing almagam fillings. Why would they require specialists to take them out when they didn't need them to put them in.
It just seems like aspestoeus here in Australia and Smoking world wide we do not find out about these things unless we dig deep. I am sure that they will not willingly own up to having problems with their poducts we could name hundreds of products that are harmful but you do not find out until someone makes the link and demands answers again also like breast implants.
Stella and Chit Chat you are both right with stress and other factors but like most major epicemics and thyriod problems are one at the moment it think it is out doing cancer at the moment. It would be interesting to get the numbers ie 1 in 4 women and the date of the huge increase like the cats one theirs esculated in 1980 and was attributed to pop top cans. A vetinary/university study pin pointed to the cans of wet food. (I run a cattery and receive all the notifications on recalls and new studies) I guess it will take someone totally fed up with this to get to the bottom of the problem....bestest to you both.

I have instructed my kids to be certain they always get the "thyroid" shield as they go to the dentist on their own as they get older ................. I'm not sure how I got my nodules but I do know that I had 2 mercury fillings taken out merely to replace them as they were very old and ended up with 2 root canals ... so when he suggested the same with the last filling earlier this month (this one had a cavity) I told him only replace what was damaged and be conservative .. so 1/2 the filling came out .. not the whole one ... and I am fine.  I ensure the "thyroid" part of the drape is in place for all x-rays .. we'll never really know about this and the whole thing on mercury and mercury fillings but science is making great strides in this arena.

I have read alot of data regarding xrays and metal filling with dental procedures. I do believe to a point there is some data out there very credible - yet I am not completely sold on it. My last dental appointment made that thought very clear to me. I questioned the mercury fillings and they did confirm they were harmful - yet the new filling material has just as much chemical base in them too - just not mercury.

I think there is a combination of life issues that cause auto immune diseases. Enviromental and well as personal changes alter our systems. and our terrific individual gene pool is our circuit board.

I am a firm believer that an over abundance of stress causes our systems to "fry" out is a big culprit. I think people who take on too much and are perfectionists really wreek havoc on their system. I am a constant worrier - and always was. I was always going 120% all the time in my younger years and now I am paying for that. Three jobs at once - raising a family - caring for family members - etc.

Floride - radiation - processed foods - smoking - drinking - and known bad habits encourage the system to become out of whack.

I think the problem lies within the individual and family history and their life style.

Now that thought could be challenged and probably will - b/c there are many healthy people that develop illness and don't have any of these things in there past. It is just such a mystery... I don't think we will know the answer ever. We can only do what we believe are good for our bodies and hope for the best. and learn what "to do" and "not to do" to improve our health.
