The upper endoscopy is basically painless.  You will be very sleepy and will likely not remember a thing.  With the endoscopy, the doctor inserts a tube with a camera lens down your esophagus.  He will look for areas of erosion/damage.  If he finds any, he will likely take a biopsy (through the same tube).  Don't worry... you won't feel it.  While he's in there, he will probably dilate your constricted areas... which is basically stretching it back to normal, so that you will then be able to swallow with no problems.  You may or may not have a mild sore throat for a few days after the procedure.  This is just some irritation from the tube and/or the dilation.  I've had it done twice now with no problems whatsoever.  You will likely be asked to return every few years for a redo, just to make sure everything is still fine.

I had the same thing.  It is to dialate your esophagus.  You won't have anymore problems with swallowing food after that.  There is really nothing to it.  Believe me.  Good luck.
