Can someone help me figure this out?

I have been sick for four weeks now.  It all started with strep throat.  I was prescribed amoxicillin and I got better.  Then, when I had just one dose left of the amoxicillin, I started to get sick again and they gave me the zpack (I've had problems before with recurrent strep).  This one turned out to be a virus, but a week later I was still running a fever and went to the doctor. The doctor thought it was bronchitis and gave me biaxin to try and prevent pneumonia (I have an IgA deficiency and have had pneumonia 7 times and I'm 23, 4 cases in the past 3 years).  Now it's almost a week later and the bronchitis is pretty much cleared up but I am STILL running a fever.  Non-stop I have been running this low grade fever (99.5-101.4) for two and a half weeks.  I have not gotten it to break at all (I've even tried ice packs).  I am sweating a lot, particularly at night except last night I had chills instead of sweating.  I have taken tylenol and advil and they lower my fever, but they won't break it.

I also have 2 burns and 5 mosquito bites that have been here about 3-4 weeks that are healing so slowly.  About a month ago I had a protein test come back at 5.8 but it has since recovered.  I've also had petechiae for the past 5-6 years and it's spreading a little bit, but I think that could be related to the antibiotic.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?  They tested me for mono and strep before I started taking the zpack and both came back negative.  I'm really concerned about this because I don't normally run a fever for this long and it's making it really hard to get anything done because I'm just exhausted.

I did go to the doctor again on Monday and they did a CBC(not platelets) and all my blood counts came back okay and redid a mono test and that was negative.

I am wanting to get this figured out because my mom has been hospitalized for about a month and I can't go see her until I've gone 24 hours without a fever, and at this rate that isn't going to happen.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Since you have fever for so long and the basic tests are normal, you should be investigated in lines of fever of unknown origin. Recurrent or chronic fever is seen in tuberculosis, SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) and other auto immune disorders, UTI, drug fever, sinusitis, glandular fever, otitis media, IBS, HIV, STDs, endocarditis, parasitic infestations, fungal infections, lymphomas and other cancers etc. In women, even polycystic ovary, menopause, PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) should be investigated for. Dehydration is a frequent cause of low grade fever with malaise. So drink plenty of fluids and see.
Most labs have a fever panel to rule out most diseases that can cause persistent low grade fever.
Ofcourse, a number of times no diagnosis can be reached and the fever subsides after some time.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Maybe you can seek another opinion. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Also, I don't know if this matters but after strep but before the virus, I had my IUD removed because it wasn't in the right spot and so I've started taking birth control.

I've stopped taking advil and tylenol for the past week and a half.  I'm just worried because this is not normal and now I have no symptoms besides the fever (and the remnants of bronchitis).  I'm still on biaxin so I don't think it can be bacterial, but wouldn't I have symptoms if my body was fighting off something viral?

I am not a doctor, but I know from talking with my childrens' doctor that a fever is a sign that your body is fighting something off.  If you have been trying to keep the fever down with medication, you may be preventing your body from fighting off whatever this is.  If your fever is not reaching dangerous temps, maybe you could try to let the fever run its course without meds.  Like I said, I'm no doctor, but maybe this will help.  I hope you feel better!
