Can't stop coughing! Please help :(

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say my age or not, but I'm pretty young. A female. Very active with no known allergies. And I've had this horrible cough for almost 6 months. It started out as a dry cough, I was treated 3 different times for allergies with 3 different allergy medicines. My doctor also gave me antibiotics to treat me for bronchitis and a nasal steroid for nasal drip cough or something like that. NONE of these things worked. If anything it had worsened. I cough until I almost black out sometimes. In the past month it has gotten really thick, lotta phlegm! So I went back to the doctor and she treated me for asthma. Shocker, that treatment hasn't helped either. My brother and dad also had a bad cough when they were younger but I seem to have it the worst. So could this be something genetic? Any ideas? I'm going crazy here. Nothing helps. :((

You may have chronic bronchitis (long term irritation of the bronchial tubes).  Bronchitis may be indicated by a productive cough (produces phlegm), shortness of breath (dyspnea) and wheezing. Occasionally chest pains, fever, and fatigue or malaise may also occur. Mucus is often green or yellowish green and also may be orange or pink, depending on the pathogen causing the inflammation.

Chronic bronchitis is caused most often by exposure to airborne pollutants such as cigarette smoke, excessive dust in the air, or chemicals. Bronchitis caused by allergies can also be classified as chronic bronchitis.  Chronic bronchitis also can have an asthmatic component.

Treatment for chronic bronchitis includes bronchodilators, anti inflammatory drugs, and chest physical therapy for loosening mucus in the lungs.

Hi there. Have you been tested for whopping cough? Do you wheeze when trying to catch your breathe? If you are just going to an allergist or primary care physician I would consider maybe having your parents take you to a pulmonologist or maybe even an ear nose and throat doctor. I hope you fell better soon!
