Chronic Upper arm pain

For the past 3 days I have had very sharp pains in the back of my upper arm. It is not constant. The pain appears when I either bend my elbow up to reach; swing the arm backwards, etc. I don't know what precipitated the start of the pain but it is very, very painful. Please advise.

Thanks,
The pain does not appear with every arm movement. Mainly when it is extended backwards; I attempt to shake something or lean on my hand with elbow bent. The pain is in the muscular part on the back of the upper arm not the shoulder area.

It sounds like you have pulled a muscle or strained a ligament in your upper arm  where you arm and shoulder meet or it could be dislocated. If its dislocated this would hurt with any movement with the arm. If the pain is extreme its dislocated.
