Constipated and Scared

I'm a 25 year old female and have been suffering with constipation for as long as I can remember and have just been coping with it.  But recently I've been having pains in my lower left side of my stomach and have been using the loo once or (twice a week if lucky) and when I go it's not a substantial amount and I'm always left feeling shaken and sick.  I've been trying laxatives things like senakot and I have been drinking things like fybogel  but nothing seems to working and recently I feel like whenever I eat anything it's not going down. I'm constantly nauseated and I feel tired all the time.

I'm so worried because my gp keeps prescribing the same thing and it's just not working! Infact I think it could be making the situation worse. I feel confused and scared I just don't have no idea what to do or where to start and I'm worried it may be too late?!?!  Please can someone give me advice and help me??"?"

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
To treat constipation you have to find the cause. Chronic constipation can be due to diet poor in roughage or fiber and also due to dehydration. A high roughage with low water too could be a cause.  Diabetes and hypothyroidism, colon disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular diseases, cancers, severe acidity etc can all cause constipation. It can also be due to milk allergy and other food allergies.
A proper investigation is required preferably by a gastroenterologist (a doctor who looks after the digestive system) to know what is the cause. The treatment will follow correct diagnosis. Hope this helps. Take care!

You need to be talking to your doctor about this!  Maybe they can put you on some kind of special diet or just keep trying different meds till one works.  Constipation and not going to the bathroom can have severe consequences on your body.  Definitely share these concerns with your doctorl.

I have heard that apples and prunes work well for constipation. I am not sure what else to try, I always eat fresh fruits and it keeps me pretty regular. Hope you get well soon.

Constipation is serious.  Toxins can back up into your body.  Slippery elm helps slide things along, along with fresh fruits/vegetables.  Also, you might start taking vitamins/minerals to keep your body in balance.  Psyllium husk is all natural and cleans as it moves through...probiotics put good flora in your colon.  Whatever you do, don't give up until something works.  Grapes/apples are also good.
