Coughing blood and nosebleeds?

I am a 16 year old female, and for about the past half of a year, I've been getting nosebleeds at an increasing regularity. I haven't been hit on the head before these nosebleeds, and I haven't jarred myself. I also don't feel them coming on at all. The last time that I had a nosebleed, which was a little less than a week ago, I also coughed up a little bit of blood, but I'm pretty sure that was only because it was in my sinuses. After the nosebleeds, I generally feel very weak, tired, and a bit nauseous. I am in generally good health, though I am teetering on the edge of anemia.

I was just wondering, how serious this is, and what might it be?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
What is important is to find the cause of nose bleed—infection, trauma, rhinitis, using blood thinning medications, high blood pressure, bleeding disorders, polyps and growths in nasal cavity. Yes, bleeding from the posterior nares into the mouth cavity can cause a gag reflex and a vomit or cugh.
It may not be something very serious, but on the other hand repeat nose bleeds can become serious too. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral to an ENT specialist.
Hope this helps. Take care!

Nosebleeds are very curious creatures.

There are various co-factors, such as high-blood pressure and an inability of the blood to properly clot.

You need a general work-up by a physician. This will probably include a ptt test, which measures the clotting time of your blood. Put "making an appointment" on your list of "things to do".

I wouldn't be overly worried. The amount of blood always seems more that it actually is.

The reason you need a medical exam is that if the body is bleeding in one area, it means that it might bleed unnecessarily in other areas. For example, if you fell and hit your head. It is important for the blood to clot quickly in such a situation.

if you are on the edge of anemia you need to take an iron supplement. the feelings you have after the nosebleeds can be symptoms of anemia. it sounds to me like with the anemia, when your nose bleeds it makes you feel bad cuz you are already anemic so then you lose more blood. when i was in elementary school i used to get nosebleeds a lot and now my 7 yr old does also. frequent nosebleeds can be caused by allergies ar dry nasal passages. you can try cleanin your nose with a netti pot. (you can find one at the drug store). i started using one and it works great. if you try it and keep getting bloodynose you should go see a doctor
