Coughing up blood

I don't really have a bad cough.I only feel the need to cough when I feel something in my throat. Then when I do cough it is red fresh  blood. This is the 3rd time this has happened. The 1st. time 5 years ago.Dr. never did find problem.Sent me for x-rays.Then the same thing 2 years ago.Again x-rays no answer.Today same thing.Started this am and still going. There is only clear spit per say.Have not been sick or feeling bad.I am a smoker.Again no cough really only get the urge when the blood pools in the base of my throat. The Dr.checked today and said he didn't think it was sinus trouble.Said he didn't see anything wrong with my throat.Had a chest x-ray.Any suggestions.

well, tb-night sweats, fever, cough x2wks or more, hemoptysis(coughing blood). since xrays showed no upper lobe abnormalities should be ok w/that.  problem:intermittent coughing of blood. go to a gastroenterologist, have u suffered from gerd, could possibly be you have esophogeal varicies, not typically painful until they are really bad. oh  change mds the physician you currently have isnt agressive enough

Hi I saw a professor who specialises in lung problems today. basically he said even though my chest x ray is clear the coughing of blood requires further investigation. I had another chest x ray a whole host of blood tests and he has booked a lung function test for march 7th . Fortunately I coughed quitesome blood up this morning so I took the sample with me and hes sending that for analysis. Hes also doing some skin allergy tests
The only thing he did mention as a possibility was bronchiectesis ( not sure how you spell it)
On the basis of this I would go back to your Dr and insist on more test Let us know how you get on. Best Wishes Crystaly

Good afternoon and thanks for all of the replies. You guys are so helpful. My Dr. just phoned and told me the x-ray showed nothing.Of course this didn't surprise me the same thing happened last 2 times. So he told me he was going to start me on an antibotic for Broncitis.Even though I really don't think this is the problem I agreed to take it.He told me if the problem presists they will do more testing.I am to call his office next week after I finish the med,i just thought if you had broncitis you had a cough.Which I don't have. The person going to the specialist please let me know what your Dr. tells you.And thanks again for everyones help and concern.

Hey it's me again! I looked up some causes for coughing up blood. The ones that I put a dash next to are the ones I think that you should be concerned about. I also wrote down some diagnostic tests you should consider. If you haven't done ALL of them, then GO and get them done. Okay I promise to leave you alone now..hehe Good luck!!

Bleeding gums such as with gingivitis
Blood clot in the lung
Bronchiectasis
Bronchitis
Cystic fibrosis
-Goodpasture's syndrome
Irritation of the throat from violent coughing
Nosebleed
Laryngitis
-Lung cancer (see metastatic lung cancer)
Pneumonia
-Pulmonary aspiration (inhaling blood into the lungs)
Pulmonary edema
-Systemic lupus erythematosus
-Tuberculosis
-Wegener's granulomatosis

Tests you should consider:

Bronchoscopy
Laryngoscopy
Lung biopsy
Mediastinoscopy
Spirometry
Tonsillectomy
Upper airway biopsy

Hey I am not a MD but I just wanted to suggest a TB skin-scraping test for you. Also, a blood test for TB. Sometimes it doesn't show up in the X-Ray or it does but it's so small that doctors miss it often. I don't know if that is what it is but what could it hurt? Just go and ask for both tests. The Skin scraping will determine whether it is present at all or not and the blood test will determine the stage it's at.
It might also be something else. It could be coming from the lungs or sometimes it's a form of heart failure. Please keep me posted and while you are at it, check out this website. I thought it might be helpful =)
