Could this be shingles

About 4 days ago I starting to get shooting pains in my left ear, more on the outside or if I touched the outer parts of my ear.  I also have an enlarged lymph node on the base of my head and I have a bump or small lump further up on my head.  I went to the doctor and said it may be strain or an insect bite.  He said heat may help.  I applied heat today and now the pain around the hairline at the base of my head and where the lymph node is, is burning and it feels like the hair is being pulled or if my skin to too tight  Also the scalp is extremely sensitive and my hair hurts on the left side of my head.  He said it did not look like shingles but with the new pain and burning in that area is this a possibility

I would like to thank everyone for their input, however, it turned out not to be shingles and I was fighting some sore of virus which gave me the symptoms.  Much better now, so once again thank you for your input and concerns.

Hi Chloe11,
Shingles is a virus (the chicken pox virus) that is left dormant in y our body after an exposure. So if you had chicken pox as a kid, shingles is always a possibility. Remember shingles affect only one side of the body at a time. So if your symptoms begin to affect your right side, it is likely not shingles.

However, I did have shingles on my right abdomen several years ago and remember too well how incredibily painful they can be. Yes my skin was very sensitive and even the wind blowing made me cringe. I have heard of folks who have a hard time getting dressed hecause clothes can be too uncomfortable.

Im not quite sure how the lymph node on the base of your head ties in with this which is why I suspect your physician is not thinking shingles. You can always call back into your docs office and ask the nurse to check your file to see what the doctor's impression was at your visit. He would document his findings in your records. If the nurse can't give out info over the phone (which is technically the law), you can also ask your physician to call you back to find out his impression of your visit. These docs are here to help you and typically don't mind a very quick phone conversation if you have specific questions.

By the time you are having pain, you can usually see a small rash break out which actually looks like tiny fluid filled blisters. And rememeber, if it does turn out to be shingles, another flare in the future is possible, but you can receive the shingles vaccine to avoid future attacks.

Best wishes and feel better.

Cloe11 it sure sounds like a possibility.  I hear they R very psiful and I have heard the comment that the hair hurt. My Friend has had them 3 times and her face bloated up real quick and she had them in her hair and face to begin with.  Hope things get better.
