DRINKING AND BRUISING

I have a very young family member who i have noticed had bruises all down her let and one large one on their angle. I asked what happened. they said it happens when they drink. It has been suspected they also do some drugs use as well. They mentioned they have a bad liver, But when I asked the mother if she was aware of this, she said no she was not aware of her older child having liver problems. I am concerned for the younger person. and I want to know if this is something to be concerned about. They also tan essesively in tanning booths and has also lost alot of weight. Can anyone help? Is this something I should insist they see a doctor about?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
If your friendis not on any medications like anticoagulants, blood thinners or birth control pills then this could be due to clotting disorders, low platelet count, fragile spider veins, deep vein thrombus, deficiency of Vitamin B12, folic acid, or Vit K, a liver disease or certain cancers. It could also be due to pressure urticaria.
Since the friends drink a lot, I feel it is a must they get liver function tests done and an ultrasound of abdomen. Yes, you must insist that the friends consult a doctor immediately. They may need help to overcome their drinking problem.
Take care!

I would be concerned with this. The things to consider here is why is she bruising? Are they drinking and getting rowdy? Is she falling, or are the bruises showing up with the slightest bump? If she truly has liver problems, I would be very concerned about her drinking and potential drug abuse. I would encourage her to seek treatment by a general physician to get a referral and possibly a drug rehab center. I wish you and your young family member the best of luck.
