Feet burning

I'm 50 years old and suffering from blood sugar (fasting around 120) for last 5 years. I'm in regular medication i.e. Metformin 500mg x1 daily. Feeling well. However, my feet are burning daily even in winter which is un-tolerable for wearing shoes too. What is the cause and its remedy?

Hello,

Here are some more suggestions for you:

1)  Always ensure that you are wearing cotton socks, which can absorb sweat and make sure that you give your feet enough air circulation and space for movement when you buy shoes. This will help in preventing the occurrence of burning feet and also ease the symptoms if you already are troubled by them

2)  Massaging is another great way to relieve the discomfort associated with burning feet. You may use a medicated ayurvedic oil for massaging your legs or just use ginger extract along with some warm olive oil for the massage.  Ensure that you massage in an upward stroke so that the blood circulation is increased and the burning sensation subsides. Massaging is one of the best ways by which you can control the symptoms of burning as well. Every day before going to bed and early morning, massage the soles of your feet for fifteen minutes. This will ensure that the feet are not starved for blood.

3) Vitamin B3, also known as niacin is known to be very helpful in treating burning feet. It strengthens the nerves and prevents the nerves from breaking under pressure. Vitamin B 3 supplements can be taken in case it is necessary and the diet can be enriched with foods like whole grains. Peas, beans, milk, yoghurt, egg yolk etc. This will help in reducing the severity of the condition and treating it completely depending on how far damaged the nerves are.

4)  A cold soak is sometimes recommended for treating burning feet. Application of cold water will help in cooling the feet and also masking the pain and discomfort. Take a bucket full of cold (not ice-cold) water and soak your feet in it for a few minutes. The cool water will help cool your feet and this will reduce and finally take care of the burning sensation. Cooling constricts the blood vessels and hence must not be done for more than a few minutes as it can worsen the symptoms.

5)  When you have burning feet and weak nerves, it is important to keep the feet protected from friction and also ensure maximum safety and protection to prevent the sensation from creeping up. When you choose shoes for your feet, remember to get shoes with soft and cushioned insoles. This will protect your soles and prevent strain and friction that can exert pressure on the nerves and cause burning sensation. It is also recommended to avoid standing for long hours and wearing shoes for long hours as this can leave your feet moist and cause burning sensation.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi, I also wanted to add that I get this occasionally, and I usually get it when my b12 or iron is low.

There are conditions that cause "burning feet",  and the most common is diabetes.  You might want to go on diabetic websites.  There is something called "diabetic cream" that you can put on your feet that might help out.
