Hysterectomy post-op

I just had a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (6 inch horizontal bikini line incision).  My uterus and cervix were removed, but my ovaries were left intact.  2 days after my surgery I developed a fever in the hospital (100.8 degrees) and an itching sensation above/below my incision and across my upper legs.  My doctor and nurses told me that it was my body's way of coping with the major surgery.  3 days after surgery, the fever is low grade (99 degrees) and the area that itched is now numb to the touch.  Is this a normal reaction to surgery or could there be other complications that they are not telling me about.

Most docs. don't consider a true fever unless your temp reaches 101.  If your temp goes up then call your doc.  It sounds like you are on the mend though.  After my hysterectomy I developed a fever and was put on antibiotics intravenously.  They let me go home with oral antibiotics and after about a week I was fine.

Your body has just had MAJOR trauma and is reacting to it.  The fever isn't an infection, but is a reaction to the surgery and is very common.  If you still have a temp after a week, the doc will put you on antibiotics.  The itching is probably a response to the tape, staples, stitches, or other things applied to keep the skin together at the incision site.  If you have tape on the incision, have the doc or nurse remove some and take a peek at your skin to make sure you aren't having a reaction to the adhesive on the tape. If there is redness or welts under there, have them exchange the heavy tapes for a paper tape. good luck

Hi , Thought I,d just say I experience similar symptoms when I had my hysterectomy . Like you I had a bikini cut and my ovaries were left intact. I,m not sure if its related to scar tissue and healing which obviously takes a while. Don,t do too much and take it easy . Take Care Chris
