I am working out and eating less, why am i not loosing weight?

Hello there.  I am a 36 years old mother of 3 rebunctious boys, ages (7, 5 and 3).  I am 5'7" tall and currently weighing 212 lbs.  I am working out nearly everyday for about 45 minutes.  I eat less, and I try not to eat after 5-6 pm.  I lost 20 lbs with meds, (Meridia 15 mg), but they are too expensive.  I am determined to loos the rest of the weight without any medication but  I seem to be stuck at 210-212 lbs for the last 3 months, and no matter how hard  I try the scale won't budge.  We are going on a trip in 2 months, and I am panicking because I wanted to be under 190 lbs.  HELP!  PLEASE!  I am getting sooooooo deprerssed and desperate about my weight, I am now starting to loose sleep over the way i look.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Common causes like overeating, lack of exercise, diabetes, hypothyroidism have to be ruled out in your case. Also you must look for other causes. One is water retention due to low serum protein. This along with anemia can cause unexplained weight gain. Adrenal gland problems are the other cause. Cushing’s syndrome should be looked for. The kidney function too should be assessed. Also the diet should contain more of green leafy vegetables, fruits and protein and less of spaghetti, potato etc. Certain medications like antidepressants cause weight gain. Late night snacking and poor sleep too can cause weight gain. Polycystic ovary too causes weight gain, hence has to be ruled out by an ultrasound of abdomen.
A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

It is great you are so determined to lose weight and you are exercising regularly!Stress isn't good for the figure, because higher cortisol levels will give you abdominal fat (I've heard on tv), so taking steps to manage your stress as best you can may help in your efforts.  Losing sleep definitely isn't a good thing.

At this point, I think you need to think you're still going to work on it, but you aren't going to safely make your weight goal in just two months time.  I think weight lost slowly is the most likely to stay off.  Have you had your thyroid function tested, because if you are hypothyroid, your slowed metabolism is working against you and you may benefit from a doctor prescribing medication for it.   And if you are skipping meals, that actually slows metabolism, so you don't want to do that.  My dad recently read that having your meals spread out is actually beneficial regarding weight rather than eating the whole meal in one sitting.

You might also concentrate on what you are eating.  Even if you eat less, if you are eating high calorie choices, it may not matter that the quantity has lessened.  Eating a small handful of nuts prior to eating your meal I've heard can help curb the appetite.

Lately, I've been losing weight without trying much.  I'm thinking it may have something to do with going up and down stairs a lot and playing with/dealing with our cat.  We have dinner for lunch and lunch as our last meal of the day.  My typical lunch starts with five macadamia nuts followed by 4 (or more when using tub) ounces of activia yogurt, at times with a handful of blueberries thrown in.  I may eat a pear (my fruit choices are limited by interstitial cystitis).  Some nights, I'll have popcorn popped in a microwave bowl and topped with smart balance & salt.  I might have a piece of American cheese.  And I have a bowl of cheerios with rice milk & less than a teaspoon of sugar (regular milk makes my GERD worse).    I don't know if that's already more than what you have for a lunch, but if it's less, you might give it a try?  I typically have very little to nothing for desserts.

Soda pop that's not diet is a big source of sugar, as can be too much juice- fresh fruit is better.  I hope something I've said might give you some hope and I want you to succeed in your effort- your health is worth it!
