INVOLUNTARY HEAD MOVEMENTS

Hi everyone.
For quite some time now, on and off I have suffered from head movements, slowly moving my head from side to side. Most times I don't even realise I'm doing it until someone tells me. Today was the first time I was aware that I was doing it, but found it hard to stop. It was the most I've done it.
I do suffer from anxiety, and I'm not sure, but I think I do it more when I'm stressed.
I went to a neurologist once with symptoms thought to be MS (which weren't), and mentioned it to him. There is a name for it, but I can't remember it. I can't really remember how he explained it, but said it wasn't bad.
Has anyone else suffered this, or does anyone know what it could be???????????????????

Thank you for your well wishes.  I really hope that you are able to find out what the cause of it is and relieve the symptom.  If you do, please let me know.  Mine is where my neck jerks down like bringing my jaw to my chest, and then side to side, not not in a "no" motion.  More of an "I dont know" motion, where it brings my ear down to my shoulder.  It makes my neck muscles tense up and hurt and causes headaches.

Im sorry that you have other things wrong at the moment.  I hope you are able to get them resolved.  Please take care and definetely keep me updated.  I will keep you in my prayers.  Thank you for helping me to realize that I am not the only person that has this problem.  If I ever find an answer, I will let you know.  Take care and good luck!

I wish you the very best of luck with your MRI and your health.
I have read on the nett about involuntary head movements, and they all say about tics. I'm not sure if mine is a tic as such. The best way I can describe it is, if you were shaking your head at someone when saying "NO", but slower.
My neurologist said the tiny lesion was nothing to worry about, however, if I got any of the symptoms again to come back for another MRI. (The symptoms were mainly patches of numbness coming and going on various parts of my body.)
I think I may look into natural medication for anxiety, but I need to check this right out, as there can be some bad medication out there. I will keep you up to date.
The thing is, I have so many other things wrong with me at the moment, that I'm trying to sort out, this really is minor compared to them. But my anxiety may be making alot of them worse, so I think that is something I need to look at.

Don't be afraid.  If it is Parkinson's, hopefully they can catch it early enough and get you on a good treatment plan to manage it, and you may never have any symptoms again.  Also keep in mind that you said yours happens when you become anxious, it could be a nervous tic.  If that is the case, then your doctor can give you a medication for the anxiety and it can prevent the involuntary movements.  If you do not want prescription anti-anxiety medicine, I think there are a few good herbal ones out there that are sold at the GNC store.  Just be sure and always let your doctor know what medications, whether prescription or holistic, that you are taking.

I am waiting on another appointment with the neurologist.  From there she will schedule my MRI, because she does that in her office.  Just waiting on the referral nurse to call me with the appointment.  Ive been waiting for more than 3 weeks now.  I've been very ill recently so they are trying to get me well before they put me through anything else.  I will let you know when I have mine and tell you if they find anything or not.  Also, make sure that they keep an eye on that tiny lesion on your brain.  It could be the beginning of MS, but it also could be something that is nothing and goes away on its own.

Anyways, go talk to your doctor and find out if it could be Parkinson's or a nervous tic.  Either way, your doctor can help get you on the right medication and help your symptom decrease.  Please keep me updated.

All this talk about Parkinson's disease scares the hell out of me!
Mine doesn't happen while I'm lying down, seems to only be when I'm sitting...
When do you have your MRI? You'll have to keep m,e up to date.

I guess it could be a form of anxiety, it might be a way for your body to release the anxiety.  But seeing as how I have the same condition, or close to the same condition, I don't know if it is anxiety.  Mine happens more at night, and really bad when I lay my head on the pillows.  It is just my neck though, and it feels like muscles contracting to make it move.  I catch myself moving my head from side to side and up and down just to mask the movements so no one knows what is happening.  You should probably get tested for Parkinsons.  If my MRI is negative, that is the next test on my doctor's list.  Glad to have found someone else who has close to the same problem.  I hope we can find an answer.

Both my neck and my head are moving.
But I have been tested for MS......My MRI did show a tiny lesion, which the neurologist said was nothing, but if I got the symptoms back again, to come back to him. it showed nothing else in the brain, and nothing in my spine.
As I said in my first comment, I think I do it more when I'm stressed/have alot on my mind. So could it just be from anxiety?????

Hey, is it your head moving or your neck?  I have this same condition.  They have attributed it to my neurological problems and have also told me that it is a symptom of MS.  I am currently undergoing testing for MS.  I notice if I use pain medication, it makes the involuntary movements worse.  But I take Klonopin and Lyrica and it seems to help decrease the problems.  Hope everything turns out ok for you.

Are you in the medical field?
No, I don't think I shake anywhere else. I do get the shakes occasionly in my legs and hands, when I let my blood sugar get too low. I have let it get too low many times, and it is horrible.
No, I haven't been checked for Parkinson's disease.
The only medication I am on right now is the contraceptive pill.

Do you shake anywhere else or when you walk is there ant hesitation? A good test for shaking is put you arm out straight in front of you and put an opened piece of kleenex over the top of your hand. The shaking is more visible this way.
Have you been checked for Parkinsons ? Are you on any medication?
