Implanon causing patchy hair loss?

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post, but as I am unsure about the exact cause of my symptoms, I thought here was the best place.

Nearly four months ago, I had the implanon contraceptive implant inserted. All seemed to be well until I went to the hairdressers recently and she spotted a bald patch at the back of my head, about the size of a 2 pence piece. My doctor says that its appearance is typical of that of alopecia areata. However, I was wondering if implanon could be the cause? I noticed in the implanon leaflet that it said that hair loss could be a side effect, but would it fall out in this sort of pattern (ie. not thinning of the hair, but a very localised, smooth bald patch)? Has anyone had this sort of side effect with implanon? I would appreciate some advice, as I certainly do not want to continue with implanon if it is likely to be causing hair loss!

i had the implant put in Nov 2008 and removed March 2009.  My hair thinned on top and around the hairline but still has not grown back and it's now been 7months or so since removal. Shouldn't it have started to grow back by now??

Hello, don't worry too much! I had lots of hair loss with the implanon after 4 months having it in. Had it removed at 6 months and went back on the pill. It's been out three months now and my hair has stopped falling out and started to regrow.

I've experienced the same problem with Implanon.  I had it fitted in December 2008, and noticed my hair line getting very thin around 3 months after.  I now have hair coming out at an alarming rate all over my head, and my ponytail is about half the size it used to be!!  Has anyone found the hair loss has stopped following removal of the implant?  I have booked an appointment to have it removed but I'm scared that the hair loss is going to continue.  Has anyone found anything that has helped?

wow, i got implanon in may 2009 and have noticed hair loss for almost a month now, i thought it was stress but the massive amounts of hair coming out had to be caused by something more. so i searced my birth control b/c it is the only thing that has changed and sure enough i found this blog! i am going to see about having this removed immediately!

Oh to piggyback on my earlier post, I am taking a Zinc supplement for the hairloss.  My oldest daughter is on Depakote for seziures which causes hair loss and the doctor said to giver her a Zinc supplement to combat the hair loss considering she has to take the Depakote to regulate her seziures.  I hope that helps those of you that may not be able to have it removed, or may want to try other alternatives first.

I had my Implanon inserted after Christmas 2008 and in February 2009 I noticed a lot of hair loss but I thought it was because I'd just had a baby in Novemeber.  However, now I have several bald patches throughout the front of my head and my hair line is getting thinner and thinner.  I thought it was stress from work but after reading this forum I now beleive it is from the Implanon.  I have a blood clotting disorder so I can not take the pill or use and IUD. My only alternative is the Depo shot but when I was on it in the past I had a period every other week, sometimes sooner and they would last for 10-14 days.  I stayed on it for almost 2 years and my body never adjusted to it.  I thought the Implanon was a contraceptive that would finally work as I have only had 1 period since it being inserted and no noticeable side effects.  I am not sure what to do considering I can not afford to have it removed now.  However, I am thankful that you all posted this so now I know what's causing my hair loss.

I got the impanon shortly after I had my second child. I am in my early twenties and now have an extremely noticable bald spot on the back of my head and I have to keep my hair up.  Before I got the impanon, my hair was very full and tick. Now it is very thin and I have like 50% of it left.  I was losing SO much hair after I got the implanon.  I really think they should mark this as a common side effect from the implanon and I want mine taken out ASAP.  I just dont know what other kind of birth control to resort to. Any recommendations?

I have the same problem with my hair.  Until I read this post I thought the loss of hair was normal. I have had the implanon in since January this year and my hair loss is getting worse.  My circle has been on for 5 weeks now and the loss of blood has reduced my blood pressure making me contantly weak, tired and touchy. I am getting the implanon out tomorrow.

I have exactly the same symptoms as you. Got my implanon in August and may hair is also very thin on top and around the hair line and I've always had thin hair anyway so this really isn't helping.  Also, I have a constant tingling sensation all over my scalp.  Got an appoinment today so I can hopefully get the implant out soon though I'm worried as I've heard that hair might keep falling out for some time even after the implant is removed. Fingers crossed everything will be okay for everyone suffering from these side effects. I also find myself in tears, A LOT!!! Crying over nothing is very tiring!

I got the implanon 3.20.08 and noticed my hair starting to come out about 1 month after I got it.  A large amount of my hair comes out when I come or brush it.  My floor is full of hair.  My stylist told me my hair is thinning in the top and I've noticed it's very thin around the hairline.  I'm getting my implanon removed as soon as possible.  I also hate the fact that my cycle stays on for 2-3 weeks at a time.  I'm in the 4th week of my cycle now.

Exacly the same thing is happening to me. I had the implan inserted on 04.06.08 shortly after i started to notice that i was losing a large amount of hair in the shower when i was washingmy hair. I asumed it was nothing to worry about as i had very thick course hair. However my hair continued to come out when i ran my hand through my hair or when brushing. My doctor assumed it was due to stress as i was sitting my GCSES around that time but i diddnt feel stressed. I stoped staightening and blowdrying my hair and just let it dry naturally curley so i wouldnt have to brush it as much and just hoped it would stop. i noticed a small bald patch at the nape of my neck, it wasnt a smooth bald pach just a pach of very fine baby hairs. i had blood tests and they came back fine with no problems. I had the implaon removed a few weeks ago and my hair is stil coming out. its not noticable just an allover thining im goin to see a specialist soon and i hope anyone with th same problem doesnt let it get to them and i hope it sorts itself out :] and will anyone who has had posts when it stop. thanks xxx

I HAVE HAD IMPLANON FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS NOW AND MY HAIR IS STARTING TO COME OUT IN PATCHES AROUND THE EDGES. I DONT HAVE ANY HEALTH PROBLEMS SO I KNOW THAT ITS THE IMPLANON. THE ONL YHING THAT I CAN DO IS GET OFF OF IT BECAUSE I NEED MY HAIR. I THINK THAT I WILL JUST  USE CONDOMS OR WHAT EVER. I REALLY LIKE THE IMPLANON BUT MY HAIR IS MORE IMPORTANT AT THIS TIME IN LIFE. IF THEY EVER COME UP WITH TO PREVENT THE SIDE EFFECT I WOULD USE THIS BC AGAIN

I've had the implanon now for a year.  Within 3 months of me first having it, I had alot of hair coming out, my hair started to thin dramatically, even if I ran my finger through it, hair was coming out.  I thought that things might calm dowm, but a year on, hair is still coming out.

I was on microgynon 30 before, but had to come off it as I had a few migranes and was told the two don't mix as this could result in me having a stroke. I then went onto Depo-provaria, which was fine and all was good, but was taken off it as, apparently more than 12 months usage could lead to osteoporosis in the hips.  So I had to move onto to the Implanon.

I've had numerous blood test and test done and all have come back negative as to why I am having a hair loss, my gp is still adamant that it's not the implanon, it's all too coincindental.  Only option is to come off it, use condoms, get a coil or no sex at all.

I know it's only for the very few that hair loss occurs, but I had very very long thick hair (that I hated as it was far too thick, but would've rather lost it by choice, eg. hair cut).  Now I only have 50% of it a year on, maybe next year, I'll have none.

If you find a solution please let me know, apart from getting rid of it, as I still kinda rather thin hair than a kid right now.
