Kidney or Back Pain?

So for the past several weeks I've had unbearable back pain that I thought was from a pulled muscle in my back. Well, heat and ice don't help and massaging the area doesn't seem to help either, so now I think there might be something going on with my right kidney. It seems to be in that general area and it hurts A LOT. I have no idea what could be wrong tho; the pain is my ONLY symptom. I'm not ill, I'm not nauseous or vomiting, I don't have a fever. My back just hurts so bad I don't know what to do about it.
Any suggestion would be most appreciated. The pain is starting to become unbearable

Hi, i some what have the same symptoms as you..Only the pain is in my left side, not all the time only sometimes..also sometimes when i breath heavy or take a deep breath..the pain is anywhere from right below my rib cage to the shoulder blade on my left side back!! Im only 17 and i had went to the dr and i had UTI took all my meds but im still having the problem..I sleep only on my left side so i thought it could be sleeping on it wrong..or just the anxiety that i suffer from..or maybe nerves considering i have been under alot of stress..

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Yes, low back pain can be due to muscle pull/strain. However there are other causes too. Pressure on the lumbar nerves can cause pain due to spondylotic changes in vertebrae, degenerative bone disease, herniated disc, bone disease, cancer or TB of the vertebra or bad posture. Kidney problems, stones in the urinary tract and colitis or IBS are the other possibilities.
Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Depending on the clinical findings you will need to get a MRI of lower spine, CT scan of abdomen, urine examination etc. You may also need to consult a gastroenterologist. Hope this helps. Take care!
