Leucocytosis, Abnormal lymphoid cell

Hi ,
My 5 yr old son's blood test report shows this observation and the doctor has advised Biopsy and bone marrow test.
I want to know more what "Leucocytosis, Abnormal lymphoid cell" really means and what are the causes for it?
Is there any alternate medicine/life style/diet changes that would help prevent this?

My son is not showing any symptoms by the way other than a swelling in the neck. And he has not gaining much wait in last 6 months, but is very active and goes to school , playground etc.

About a week before we saw the swelling, he had rash all over the body and fever, which got cured after 3-4 days.

Thanks,

Leukocytosis is not exactly a disease, it only means that probably your son had an infection because his White Blood Cells are high.

Now the Doc. is worried about the Abnormal lymphoid so precautionally he thought to do biopsy and bone marrow test.

The bone marrow practically produces blood cells, sometimes these cells develop abnormally. These abnormal cells are found in Leukemia. Also rash and neck swelling are compatible with Leukemia.

Although I believe there can be other causes for that, so do not rush for diagnosis. The  good sign is that his WBC are high not low, that is the opposite to Leukemia and therefore I don't think that bone marrow biopsy is the priority, it is also an invasive test. Also he should have been feeling very weak, with pallor, low hemoglobin and platelets! None of that I reckon.

"Abnormal lymphoid" is not a specific finding, only something abnormal so we don't know exactly what it was.

Also the skin rash he had should be examined by a specialist because it is very plausible that if he had an infection and Leukocytosis or even Leukomoid Reaction he developed rash and swollen neck because of that.

Probably Leukemia rash looks different to other types of rash from Immunological response.

there is no "alternate medicine" , only "alternate doctors".
the only thing in his lifestyle that could have caused that are exposure to infections, chemicals, some medicinal. nothing in the diet.

Your Doctor did well not to underestimate the findings in blood tests but maybe he's rushed a bit, there are many other things that can be taken into consideration.

All said, I am not a Doctor, my advice is, if the child is strong and healthy in any case to repeat the complete blood count, ESR, liver function after one-two months from the last and get an appointment with Hematologist or Immunologist bring the tests with you. Your Doctor's advice could be exaggerated or not proper for the diagnosis but he saw there was something wrong so definitely consult a Specialist to double-check with his opinion!

Keep a log of symptoms etc. when he had the fever, rash, etc. so you'll know exactly what to refer to the specialist.

Thanks! you are spot on even if not a doctor :) well ur doc and in fact 3 others who we consulted were of the opinion that we must get biopsy and bone marrow test done to rule out the possibility of lymphoma or TB
So we did go for it in the weekend, the reports are all normal :) and it seems my son is suffering from "Reactive follicular hyperplasia" and there is no cause of concern, just as you said - we need to avoid infections as much as possible and keep a log so that if this was some allergy we know what it was!

I wish now that we had waited for some more time, got other tests done and then went for these tests :( nonetheless lesson learnt!
