PLEASE HELP

My husband has been experiencing chronic diahrrea for the past 6 years.  He also has been getting periodic chest pains & has gained weight.  I'm not sure all these problems are related.  He has been seen by a gastroentologist(?) & has been treated for anxiety.  Are there any other suggestions?  This has taken complete control of our life.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Chronic diarrhea persisting for 6 years can result in nutritional deficiencies, anemia, low albumin etc which can contribute towards weight gain. Chronic diarrhea can be due to parasitic infestations—to be ruled out by stool test.  Other causes are irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, crohn’s disease, malabsorption syndromes, pancreatic diseases, diabetes, hyperthyroidism etc. Abnormal liver function too can cause this problem.
A number of times a gastroenterologist is able to diagnose these conditions by clinical examination and detailed medical history. At other times a few tests are conducted. Blood tests to rule out anemia, stool test to look for white blood cells, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy etc are used to diagnose ulcerative colitis. Braium meal and follow through, endoscopy etc are done to rule out GERD, Crohn’s disease etc. Irritable bowel syndrome is diagnosed by elimination of other causes. Gluten is a complex protein present in four main grains---wheat, rye, barley and oats. If you have gluten intolerance, then you probably have celiac disease or Non Celiac gluten sensitivity. There are blood tests called celiac test to detect gluten intolerance. Pancreatic enzymes, liver function tests, CT scan of abdomen etc too will need to be carried out.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
