Pain in my right side under my rib cage.

I am 16 years old. I have had a pain on my right side right under my ribs and occasionally on the bottom part of them for about 2 weeks now. The pain feels like someone is stabbing me, but it comes and goes. It has gotten progressively worse since it started. The doctor thought that is might have been gallstones so he sent me to get an ultrasound. They ultrasounded my whole abdomen. They looked at my gall bladder, kidneys, liver, stomach, bladder, spleen, and everything else. The results came back and they said everything was normal. Yet, I still have the stabbing pain which is getting worse and more often. Please help, any suggestions?

We have had more tests done. Besides the ultrasound I have had an xray and bloodwork done. The blood work was a cbc and they look at my liver enzymes. All were normal. I also got a ct scan of my abdomen and pelvis which also came back normal. It does not hurt to press on the area. And it is not swollen or inflamed.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
I understand you have undergone a number of tests—still I am enumerating all the causes—maybe the pain has a location outside your abdomen.
If the pain is on the outside, it can be costochondritis, which causes pain and tenderness at points where your ribs attach to your breastbone.  The inflammation around the joint area gives sharp pain on taking a breath. This can also cause tenderness on pressing the area which pains. An orthopedic doctor can diagnose this for you. Generally there is no cause. However it can be due to infection, blow, injury, or fibromyalgia. It usually goes away on its own. Otherwise it can be treated with muscle relaxants, and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. It can also be muscle pull. Shingles can also start this way.
If you have pain under your right rib then there could be a liver infection, pancreatitis, or a gall bladder problem. Get a liver function test, ultrasound or CT of abdomen, and pancreatic enzymes. It can also be due to acidity and duodenal ulcer. Take a late night snack. Raise head end of bed. Take Omeprazole empty stomach in morning and an antacid gel at bedtime. Refrain from smoking, alcohol, fuzzy drinks and spicy food. Walking around also helps clear gas. Pain under right ribs with gas can be due to any inflammatory bowel disease like Celiac or Crohn’s, IBS or due to food intolerance. Pain under right rib case can also be due to pleurisy, asthma, or any other lung problems. Usually this is accompanied by lung related symptoms like breathlessness, cough etc. If all these are ruled out, then laparoscopy should be done, especially if you have a previous history of any abdominal or pelvic surgery. Such an undiagnosed pain is usually due to adhesions and cutting the adhesions takes care of the pain. Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net please discuss with your doctor once. Hope this helps. Take care!

I haven't been involved in any accidents, no other symptoms besides my normal allergies. It comes and goes whenever. Everything is passing normally. Doctor didn't order any blood tests but he said if it still hurts tomorrow to come back in, and I'm sure he's going to order more tests if so. Doesn't hurt if the area is pressed. No fever. Only illness is my normal allergies have gotten slightly aggitated with the changing weather. Other than that, everything is completely normal.

If you are on medication check the side effects of each med.  Cut down on diet soda as it effects us all in different ways. Try process of elemination of food in your diet to possibly ear mark a food cause. Taking large doses of Tylenol has caused similar problems. Write down what you eat and drink each day to evaluate possible alergetic reactions.

Hope this helps.
