Pilonidal Sinus

I had a pilonidal sinus operated on in April this year, it's never healed and i've been told i have to have another operation. I'm very concerned because the area is swollen, i have been told that i could have more than one sinus. is there any way possible that i can prevent this happening whilst the sinus wound is still open? also, it was not caused by an ingrowing hair, there has been no explanation for it. Could you give me any suggestions to ways to prevent them coming back in the future as they are very painful and uncomfortable

Thank you.

Thank you. The wound is always full dressed and cleaned, would it be because it is in a difficult and secluded position?

Sorry about all the questions but it has been 5 months since my operation and i just want to get on with my life again.

Many thanks.

Hello,

Hair follicles are not alone responsible for causing pilonidal sinus. Other factors like hormones, friction and infection are equally important. In your case, either it was more than one pilonidal sinus leading to chronic pilonidal disease or it was due to reinfection in neighbouring hair follicles or chronic infection from entry of hair or debris into a postoperative wound leading to complex or recurrent pilonidal disease.

Surgical management of chronic and recurrent disease is controversial. Numerous studies have been put forward advocating one treatment over another but none has been proved better than the others.Presently, the various methods used are incision and drainage, excision and healing by secondary intention, excision and primary closure
and excision with reconstructive flap techniques.Pls discuss these options with your doctor.

Hygiene, proper dressings after surgery and depilation is the only ways to prevent recurrent pilonidal sinus.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.
