Right Side Pain, Under chest

Hi, Forum,

I started having mild "chest pain" earlier tonight, and it was only on the right side. It wasn't until I touched my ribs that I realized it was actually sore, sore enough to make me cry upon touching it. It hurts to breathe, but mainly hurts when I press on my side (to the point where it makes me dizzy and queasy). I've asked different family members and answers have ranged from gas, gallbladder complications, or a cracked rib. (I'm a rather severe asthmatic, and do cough a lot). The pain has only gotten worse, and sleep is a no-go right now. If I touch my ribs, I literally cry. I've taken medicine for gas, with no relief. I took advil, didn't phase it. My family suggested I just lay down, but I'm finding that very difficult. I don't want to waste a trip to the emergency room if it's not necessary-- any advice?

The HIDA scan took a long time for me (usually, it's supposed to take much less time), and what I was laying on was not comfortable, but I found it rather neat watching as the dye or whatever it is made it's way along in my body.

Blessed to serve and glad to try and help!  Hopefully, you will find you won't need surgery! :0)

He hasn't done a blood test so far. I'm not looking forward to the HIDA scan, that's for sure! I hope it comes back normal. I'll check your message in just a minute, thank you for being helpful! I hope everything is just over-reacted, because I don't have time to have surgery, haha! (:

Thanks so much for the update!  Did your doctor do a blood test in connection with the gallbladder (I've had this before)?  See private message for some info I found on biliary dyskinesia.  I had a HIDA scan (prior to the decision made with the help of probing fingers by a surgeon that I had costochondritis) and my gallbladder was very slow about emptying- I think it was about 70 minutes if I remember right.  I also had an MRCP, where the ductwork was looked at and that came back fine.

Thank you for the replies! I went to my doctor, and his suspicion is my gallbladder. He ordered an ultrasound to rule out gallstones, and believes I have biliary dyskensia. He's ordered a HIDA scan for next week to see if I will need to have surgery to remove my gallbladder. I really hope it is just a pulled muscle! It's been over a week, and the pain has eased, but is still there, but no longer hurts to breathe. I do get nausea after eating, though. I appreciate all the help and will update with my results next week! (:

Sounds like a strong possibility it may be costochondritis, which can be very painful, an inflammation that is musculoskeletal in nature, and it can even hurt to breathe when one has it.  You might try looking it up online and see if you think that might be it.  Typically, with costochondritis, it can be pinpointed by probing with the fingers.  The treatment a doctor has prescribed to me before for costochondritis is 600 mg ibuprofen cyclically for 3-4 days.  Moist heat and rest of the area as much as possible is also helpful.

Hope you can hang in there with this painful problem!  Please check with a primary care doctor if you did not go to the ER last night to hopefull get the problem properly diagnosed and for them to determine what the treatment should be.

You would not be wasting a trip to the emergency room or seeing a doctor.

You are asthmatic.  You may have coughed too much and this has pulled a muscle.  Or on the other hand, as you are having a mild chest pain and it hurts to breathe, it is likely that you have a chest infection.

Go the the emergency room and get checked out.

I have mild asthma and it is no fun.  I don't think you have pleurisy, because you usually get pain on breathing out.  If you feel any crackling in your lungs, you have a chest infection and will need an antibiotic.

My advice, is get checked out as soon as possible.

Best wishes
