SEVERE ABDOMINAL PAIN

I have recently been experiencing some discomfort in my abdomen area. Today, I began having severe occasional cramps that felt close to contractions. This was also accompanied by fever and chills. I am not pregnant, so I know it is not labor pains of any type. My doctor put me on an antibiotic and said come back in a week if it is not any better. Any ideas of what might be causing these pains?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Severe abdominal pain, with cramps and fever, is generally due to gastroenteritis or stomach infection or due to food poisoning. Drink plenty of fluids (clear soups, water, ORS in water, lemonade). Eat light, do not stay hungry but eat simple things like toast, porridge, cereals, crackers, banana, rice, peeled apple, etc. Take ORS. Take over the counter antacid and antiemetic (this SOS for vomiting). Watch out for a day or two with this treatment.
However, its important to rule out appendicitis as the cause of pain and fever, as this can be dangerous. Hence it is important to get un ultrasound or CT of the abdomen if appendicitis is suspected. Ask your doctor about it.
Take care!

Well, I have a son that started with similar symptoms that only got worse for him. He went to a stomach specialist and they did some testing to find out he had Irritable Bowel Syndrome. He now takes a few meds each day and he is doing much better. But, I can remember him always cramping for a long time and then finally he would have either diarreah or be constipated. Do you have these same occurrances? If so, I would get checked by an gastro I(think that is what kind of dr. it is,)anyway, ask or a stomach specialist If these symptoms continue and especially if it happens after eating certain foods and then the bouts of going to the restroom. Hope this helped. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Have you been having regular bowel movements? If not or even if you are having unusual bowl movements you could have a blockage. I'm not sure about the fever or chills you may have some type of bug that could even bee causing the abdominal cramping. If you have been constipated or less than the usual amount of bowel movements you can take a laxative to start things going. I am not sure if but if you have had diarrhea and vomiting don't bother listening to me you don't want to get dehydrated after all. I went to the er one time with the same problems you described but with constant pain (I could not stand) and the thought of being constipated never crossed my mind because I had been going just not enough. They gave me a script for gas x and told me to take a gentle laxative with senna in it and I was feeling better by the next day. Good luck to you
