Scabbed new healing weird

I badly skinned both knees over a week ago. I tried cleaning it and using hydrocolloid bandages on them unfortunately they both got infected. My doctor put me on antibiotics for 7 days, which are now done. Also he told me to leave them uncovered but I can cover them during the day when I'm out. At night I've been putting on tea tree oil and in the morning after a shower, I use alcohol to dry them out before covering them. Scabs are forming around the rim but not in the center. They always look dry until after I cover them up with a pad or bandage. The pads are always wet like the wounds are oozing all over again. I'm nervous that they're still infected or may get reinfected.
Am I worried about nothing or is there really something wrong? Do I need to make a follow up appointment with my doctor?

It is imperative that you keep the knee wounds absolutely dry.

Every time that you are washing and applying alcohol on it (which you shouldn't do anyway) is wetting and wiping away the oozing which will then form a crust when left to dry and form a scab. Once a scab is formed the healing process goes on underneath the scab.  So it is very important to leave the scab alone and let if fall off on its own as mentioned by the Nikodecreta.

By you wetting and applying moist creams to the wound, you are delaying the healing process.

If you do need to cover it up when you go out, do so very loosely.  Or wear a longer skirt.

If you notice that the wound is very red and starts to exude green or yellow puss, then get back to your doctor because that will indicate that the would has got infected again.

Do not wet it at all and definitely do not apply any more alcohol on the wounds.

If you leave it well alone and keep it dry, it will start to form a crust and heal .

Best wishes.

Hi CassandeF.

The liquid discharge is a normal wound draining fluid and just use saline solution to clean it and apply some antibiotic cream afterwords.

I think using alcohol is a bit harsh and it might actually interfere with the
regeneration of skin tissue, however, protecting it from all the contact with water from the shower, would be better.

Afterwards, covering it too tightly is perhaps not the best way. I would cover it securely but loosely. Because it is around the knee, it may take a bit longer, so if you don't see scabbing in a couple more weeks don't be too alarmed.
Mine took about 4 weeks  to fully scab after I wiped out on my mountain bike.
I also tried to expose it to dust-free air as much as I could.
Actually I stayed under the sun a few times after swimming in the ocean (it did sting a lot!!!) for a couple hours each time.
I think it helped. Who knows?

Please do not pick on the scab till it falls off on its own.
Patience is rewarding! lol!

Best wishes!
Niko
