Scared, please help.

Ok i have had a cold or allergies (not sure which) for the past 2 weeks and have not been able to get rid of it. I have been taking cold medicine and nasal spray but nothing is helping. It has cleared up a little this morning but about 15 minutes ago i had a bunch of mucous come up from my throat. I spit it into the sink and i noticed that there was something black in it. It almost looked like the color of tar. Some was solid black and some was translucent. I dont know what this could be and it is really scaring me. I have heard that blood can be black at time. My medical history/health problems are just problems with my ovaries and IBS. I was on the pill from sept of 2011 to april or 2012.  Other than that i have only been on pain killers from te hospital when i was admitted recently. Does anyone know what this could be. Its really scaring me and i know its not normal to have something black come out of you. Can somebody please help me?!

The black stuff is tar. It takes several months to get the tar out your lungs. And when you smoke, you stay sick much longer. I used to be a ciggarette smoker. I would stay sick for weeks and coughed up black stuff for about 3 or 4 months, even when I wasn't sick. My advice to you is to switch to electronic ciggarettes. The only chemical is nicotene. With the electronics, you can breath and function, and you don't smell bad. But you are fine. Everything you are going through is normal to a ciggarette smoker. Even one ciggarette a day is damaging to your lungs and your lungs do not begin healing until months after you quit.

I think the black stuff is because of the cigarettes, from tar. It takes a while to clear the poison from your system.

If you are coughing up blood, get tested for TB.

There are a lot of viruses going around, like whooping cough, flu, etc.  You need to quit smoking so that when you get sick like everybody does, your cigarette use doesn't compound your problems and confuse diagnosis.  It is really an idiotic thing to do, smoking.
