Seeking Diagnosis Help for Rocking Vertigo Synced with Heartbeat
Hi Everyone,
Newbie here. I've been struggling with vertigo/rocking sensations for over 4 months and hoping this board will help suggest some directions to follow as I still have yet to get a diagnosis...
Summary: Vertigo is rocking and pulsatile, meaning I feeling a constant sensation of rocking back and forth (from my head/torso) and the rocking is synchronized with my heartbeat. The intensity varies, with no apparent reason, from mild and just annoying to intense and incapacitating. High pitched Tinnitus is constant in the right ear but often gives me several hours warning of an imminent attack by getting louder and bilateral (get's quieter along with the vertigo). I also have headaches after weather changes. Pain is centered in my forehead.
I have a HUGE history of medical visits now (this started in August). Suffice to say that after extensive and repeated testing (two MRI brain scans, two rounds of Caloric/ENG testing, three rounds of hearing tests, blood tests, MRI of my cervical spine, and just about any other standard stuff) we have pretty well excluded Meniere's, MS, tumors, fistulas, BPPV.
I do know that I had mild cervical disc herniation of C4-C7 during the first attack. Acupuncture sessions improved the neck pain but it is back now, after a minor play session with my two year old when he jumped on my back (did not hurt at all at the time).
I can't help but think that a rocking sensation that goes in time with my heartbeat should be a pretty clear and distinct symptom. But I can't seem to find anyone else with this kind of sensation.
Recently I've been pursuing migraine associated vertigo and/or cervical vertigo. Unfortunately the last neurologist I saw had no idea of what to do with me and simply let me go (I live in rural Japan and doctors here are very reluctant to make referrals).
Any ideas anyone?

I have very similar symptoms. I have not had the mRI if spine and have just been referred to neurology after my primary care doctor, ENT, cardiac workup, MRI, Audiology, and VNG exam are all negative. After my visit to urgent care last week now they are pack to vestibular neuritis (although my VnG exam was negative) I'm on prednisone with minor relief. I am going to suggest exploring the micro vascular compression. Please post any updates or relief. I will also try acupuncture and massage.
I have pots disease a low blood pressure disorder and u have very similar symptoms to me ... Ask ur dr about that? And maybe get ur blood pressure checked lying and standing

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and narcolepsy. My doctor believes that I may have an autoimmune disorder like lupus, but diagnosed FMS due to a lack of consistentcy in my labs. Vertigo is an issue I face constantly with the symptoms being nausea, tinnitus, a rocking sensation as you described, dizzy or drunken feelings, and so forth. Not sure if that helps, but best to you.

Please also search Ménière's disease it is said that u should get tested for tumors as well because they can produce similar symptoms to Ménière's disease and good luck!
I have experienced a balance disorder of rocking, headaches, pressure in the head etc for a month and have had previous episodes of this following a flight. I am sure I have Mal de Debarquement Syndrome for which there is a web site and support group.It is an extremely unpleasant and debilitating condition and it has no cure but it does have periods of remission but t he trigger is another boat cruise or plane trip. I am sure this will be the answer to many of the queries above.Because of the lack of medical knowledge of this it only adds to the frustration and anxiety we feel .Look up website and you will find the answer.
I have the same symptoms of rocking and my head pulses with my heartbeat. Any information, med recommendation or physical therapy would be a great help.
Have any of you been tested for Disembarkment Syndrome? There is no cure and can last for many years and also can stop as quickly as it comes. It is hard to diagnose. It will many times cause anxiety but always is accompanied by the rocking feeling.

I'm also having similar symptoms. My "rocking" started about three months ago, but only when I lay down and mostly on my right side. However, withing the last month it happens when lying on my back and on my left side, as well. When I went to the ENT, I started "rocking" just by wearing the ear plugs for the hearing test, which really baffled him. Ever since then, I am experiencing some rocking sensation while sitting up, especially when working on the computer.
My husband and I went to Las Vegas for a long weekend and the symptoms went away (Vegas is very dry and we live in the wet and humid midwest). The symptoms came back with a vengence upon our return. Sounds like a fluid situation to me, but the doctors are not convinced.
My right ear feels "plugged" all the time, but my hearing is not effected. I do not have headaches or tinnitius. Flying doesn't bother me. I don't think that Lyme disease is a factor since this started in the winter months. I always been sensitive to motion (cruises, 360-movies, amusement park rides).
My doctor says my symptoms are all over the board and don't fit into any one category. I'm waiting for MRI results.
I went to a chiropractor who says she can help, but it actually got worse.
I hope that together we can find the answer and that some ENT's are reading this website.

Hi people, i'm having the same simptoms described here including tinnitus, does anyone already have a clue of what could be causing this?

My current situation is that I've been placed on Paxil, an anti-depressant. Seems like most docs go this route once they've run out of answers (funny that they go for the most unscientifically verifiable 'it is in your head' once they've run out of options). Paxil makes me sleep more and seems to have reduced the anxiety so that the rocking vertigo is more irritating that anxiety arousing. However it still ebbs and flows daily.
The caveat is that I did have my first week free of rocking a few weeks in to taking the Paxil, when the sleepy side effects were most pronounced and after I'd had a really good session with my acupunturist/massage person where he worked really hard to try and correct the structural alignment in my neck. The vertigo/rocking came back after I did some forward bending one day (I'm a yoga teacher).
I'm guessing that the deep sleep produced by the paxil, coupled with the realignment done by the acupuncturist did something to temporarily relieve the microvascular compression. I suspect that normal stress creates muscle tension that aggravates my condition.
Anyway, in two months I'll be moving back to the U.S. and will be looking into a famous massage therapist in LA who says he's fixed people with these kinds of symptoms before. If that does not work then I'm going to look into a special kind of chiropractor called an Applied Kinesiology (AK) (http://www.****.com/). I've heard about someone who's helped this kind of thing in the San Francisco Bay Area and also somewhere in Kansas.
I'll keep posting my updates here, though the next two months will be crazy with my move!

Have you learned any more? I have felt exactly the same since December 28th. Went to vestibular rehab - did not help - am taking a low dose of valuim daily -not sure it makes a difference.
Symptoms seem to be worse in close space, I have little to no anxiety, enjoy and am fortunate to love my life and job - I know it's not stress (which seems to be the easy answer).
Are you taking any meds that help? (and perhaps to not have side effects that are worse?) -

I am seeing a neurologist in the Boston area on april 2nd...hope he can help.

One other thing. It was discovered that I had nerve inpingement in my neck. I had three rounds of epidural injections ( has not helped the pushing pulling rocking sensation ).
I cant believe it . I feel like I just read something that I couldnt have said any better. Except for the tinnitus my symptoms are exact and so is my search for a diagnosis. My exact symptoms started about the same time. I live outside of New York city and have been to many top Dr's. I have even traveled to Johns Hopkins to see a top ENT. I have also have stumped all the DR's to the point where they have givin up. I have spent hours upon hours researching myself and could not find a single case like mine. UNTIL NOW. Would love to hear from you
