Severe Fecal Blockage

My brother, age 69, has been suffering over the years from irritable bowel syndrome. He has been taking supplements to counter his symptoms. Over the past 12 months he has experienced severe abdominal pain (three separate instances) which felt as if he were a woman in labor, with the body unsuccessfully attempting to expel the foreign matter. He did meet with a specialist, who worked on him for 45 minutes to extricate the fecal matter. But the doctor did not know what the cause of this might be.
The last of these instances was after a 24 hour fast. After the fast, he drank 8 glasses of water to rehydrate himself, but awoke the following morning with the same symptoms.
Can anyone offer any advice ?

Ok, good if he has had the colonoscopy recently that it is not likely a blockage. Although, blockages can occur depending on what his colon is like and so forth. Also, the diet may help. If it continues with eating small portions and changing to this kind of diet (even though it is hard to change to if he eats a lot of meat) then he should see a GI doctor. Also, if he really wants to change his diet there is a website for some diet meals on www.drmcdougall.com My husband and I are on this diet. It takes a while to get used to when you have eaten meat all your life. Also the video "forks over knives" is quite compelling. Still even starting with very small portions say 6 times a day instead of 3 meals might help motility. But this diet helped us a lot in various ways. The book explains why we don't need so much protein. My husband's cholesterol was high and his blood pressure and the diet lowered both so he is almost off his medication. My cholesterol was high and I don't have to go on meds at all. My doctor said I had a genetic marker for sudden heart attack and that it would never change. But I went on this diet and it did change. So now I don't have that marker. He can't believe it. I'm just happy and not trying to push this. So it is worth the change to me. It also helps to prevent a lot of cancers (or course you never can prevent all cancers) and type II diabetes and lowers weight and can reverse atherosclerosis. If you want more data on this the DVD Forks over knives has some references as does the book. But there is a lot more. It has helped with my digestion but we also use Metamucil in the morning too. That can't hurt in his case.
take care,

Thank You. I truly appreciate your response. I shall forward the information to my brother. Although I am quite certain, that he has had a recent colonoscopy

Have they checked him for any blockage? Maybe he should get a colonoscopy and see if there is any problem going on. If that is negative then it may be diet related. If it is diet related maybe he needs to cut way back on meat and eat more of a whole plant based diet with whole grains and veggies. Eat less and more often with small portions. Read the Starch Solution by Dr. John McDougall. Also, low fat. But it sound like it could be a blockage of some sort.
