Shingles in the face, no rash present

I am experiencing pain in my face by my nose. It started with some pain in my right nostril that seemed to be some sort of pimple inside my nose but no sign of a pimple. The 2nd day my face started to swell near my nose and progressed up toward my eye, just under the eye lid. It is also creeping down toward my neck, feeling a numbing and sometimes a tingling sensation as well as some itching on the skin. There is no rash but it is really painful. The doc seems to think I have shingles but can't be sure but he did give me an anti-viral. Do you think the doctor could be right? I did have them when I was 9 years old, and they were on the right side of my chest and back. I am a 43 year old woman.

Hi,
Thank you for the response. When I first went to the doctor they gave me Augmentin in case it was an infection and Ibuprophen for the pain/swelling but I called back in to tell them of the increased swelling and severe pain so they gave me some loratab and an anti-viral. I did some research and it almost looks like Bells Palsy more than shingles. The pain is pretty much the same as before when I am not taking the loratab but I feel that the droopiness I am experiencing is lessening.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Pain and swelling could be due to shingles or due to infection too. It is possible that there was a hair follicle infection in the nose or any other infection under the skin and this could be the cause too. Get your blood sugar tested. Discuss with the doctor whether taking antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drug will help.
Hope this helps. Do let me know if there is any thing else and keep me posted. Take care!
