Tongue Problem

For no reason my tongue will beome VERY sore.  It also gets a white coating on it.  This has been happening for many years.  Long before I started taking any medications.  Each doctor/dentist I have told this to tells me it is nothing to worry about.  I'm not worried, but it really does hurt.  Any suggestions or answers?  Thank you in advance.

You absolutely CANNOT put 100% hydrogen peroxide solution in your mouth and swish around with it. This would be extremely dangerous, and any concentration above 50% would likely cause severe bleeding. You would not be able to find 100% hydrogen peroxide in a grocery store or pharmacy anyway, as concentrations above 70% are mostly used as a propellant, and if heated above 70 degrees celsius will explode.

I think what Amanda meant was a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, which is what you would find in grocery stores and pharmacies. When using orally, it is even recommended that you dilute the 3% solution with water (one part solution, one part water). DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH WITH ANYTHING MORE CONCENTRATED THAN 3% HYDROGEN PEROXIDE SOLUTION!!!

Thrush is very common in babies. My white tongue is still white and although 2 thrush samples came back negtive I still took some medication for it with, of course no results.

I cant get rid of this whiteness on my tongue. Sometimes a good scrape helps but only temporary

Have you tried using the hydrogen peroxide as I described?  This is the only thing that has worked for me.  Some people have had good results from taking vitamin B supplements as well.  It has kept mine under control for a long while now.

Generally, a white coating on your tongue is Thrush.  Thrush is caused by an overabundance of yeast.  Have you been perscribed Nystantin for this condition?  Infants often get this.

If you have been treated with Nystantin, and have not had any success, then I would have to hazard a guess and say that it is probably geographic tongue.

Geographic tongue is a harmless conditon, that does not have a known cause as of yet.  Since you said that your doctor and dentist have blown it off as nothing, I am willing to bet this is in fact what it is.  Since there is no treatment for geographic tongue, that is generally what happens.

I have had this conditon for many years now, and more than anything, mine is unsightly.  The main concern is that your is painful.  Avoid irritating your tongue with hot or spicy food, alcohol, or tobacco.  These substances can be what is triggering your pain and irritation.

Here is what I have found works the best to keep the condition under control:

Step 1:  Use a regular mouthwash -- swish around mouth for 1 - 2 minutes before spitting out.

Step 2:  Use a 100% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution in mouth for 1 - 2 minutes.  You will feel the peroxide bubbling up in your mouth.  This is normal.

Step 3: Brush Teeth Thoroughly (I use a toothpaste that contains baking soda and peroxide -- this works best for me)

Step 4:  Brush the surface of tongue thoroughly, rinsing brush several times in between (I actually rinse my brush in peroxide as well -- just pour some over the brush -- it seems to be more effective that way).

Step 5:  Once again rinse mouth with Hydrogen Peroxide.

This usually makes mine look and feel better the first day.  A regular routine of this should help your tongue to look and feel better indefinately.  Some sufferers only do this routine for a few days and then wait until it flares up again (anywhere from a few weeks to a few months later).  However, I do this routine on a regular basis, and have not had any problems since I started doing it.

Let me know if this works for you.  I hope it helps.

Sincerely,

Amanda

White coating can be caused by number of things. I dont think it is thrush, but I really dont know what could cause the pain. Do an x-ray

I disagree with you amanda. Thrush and "white coated tongue" look almost the same and even doctors ofren misdiagnose it but they are totally 2 different things.

Oral thrush can be caused by antibiotics, steroids, dentures and when your autoimune system is week (i.e HIV)

On the other hand, white coated tongue can be caused by many different things and usually is not a reason to be concerned.

If you can wash your tongue off and if the white stuff peels off and bleeds under that it is likely to be oral thrush.

I realize they are different.  I think I may have came across wrong.  What I was saying is that if the poster has in fact seen doctors and dentists about this problem, and he said he has taken medications, then Thrush has probably been ruled out.

My son had 3 bouts of Thrush when he was a baby.  I on the other hand do not have Thrush, I have geographic tongue.  That is what it sounds like the poster has.

The routine I described is what helped me.  It may not help the poster.  However, the fact is, if the poster tries it, and it does not work, no harm is done.  It is a very inexpensive routine, and I have had success with it as have many others.  In my point of view, if Thrush has been ruled out, then it is worth a shot.

Take care,

Amanda

This is thrush (an oral yeast infection). A single dose of Diflucan will cure it. Do you use any kind of steroid inhalers, or prednisone? This increases yor susceptibility, as do antibiotics. It doesn't mean you should stop using these meds. Just be aware that it can come back. Eat yogurt with live cultures, and this will replenish the "good" bacteria your body needs to keep the yeast growth away. In some cases, constant thrush can be a sign of something more serious, so if it comes back often, be sure to get your immune system function checked.
