Veins suddenly prominent, dark NOT protruding
This one suddenly showed up yesterday and has me very concerned.
Suddenly the veins on my upper left (mostly) and right arms, from just above the elbow down to just above the wrist
became dark and enlarged. I've also had problems with my left hand tingling, getting cold and diminished sensation while holding the phone or holding up a clipboard for a length of time. The hand was actually ice cold!!!
I'd been holding a clipboard up at eye level working on an art project when I noticed my arms yesterday and the veins went back more to normal within a few hours after keeping them lowered. But it occurred again later, and I notices an ache in my forearms when this happened.
I have a history of Hepatitis C since 1984 - I had open-heart surgery in my 20's to correct an atrial septal defect. SO I wonder if this is a cardiac, venous or liver-related problem.

HOW do they check to see it its a thrombus??? Do they do ultrasound or do I have to drink a contrast material to make veins show up on x-ray, or what??? Also, should I not do much work with my arms in case it is a thrombus - so that it doesn't break loose! (This scenario makes my hair stand on end). As a former photojournalist and EMT I used my arms a lot in the past, so with my Hep C situation, it also could be faulty valves.Can they fix these??? I feel like I fell apart starting at age 50....but I feel to young to have 'bad' valves in my arms!

Welcome to the forum!
In all probability, the veins became enlarged or engorged as they are called because of holding the cupboard and bearing its weight. This may cause the veins to swell and subside from time to time for a day or two. However please ask your doctor to take a look at it. There may be faulty valves in the deep veins or there may be thrombus.
