Vitamin D

For almost 2 years, I have been, and continue to be, treated for Fibro, Osteoarthritis, Senile Osteoporosis (daily injection of Forteo), high blood pressure and low/none vitamin D, and periods of low white cells. Was checked for the usual, RA, Lupus etc.  Nothing showed up. Previous health-worked fulltime around 50 hours a week or more, constantly going and doing, did many family dinners, active runner, won divisional 5k first place and masters and weight trained. BMI is around 20. Gradually, my health began to change, and it got to the point, the pain was out of control in my bones and muscles, I had to do something. I couldn't run as fast, or continue to do the things I loved doing. Fatique was so bad, I slept at lunch. Now, I am unemployed, which was nothing due to health. The company closed all offices in the US.

Vitamin D has been an ongoing problem. Now I take prescribed 100,000 units of D per week. The RH doctor who put me on the meds to control the above and is going to take a PTH test in a few weeks. From my research, and the ailments, it appears my problem has been a continual low or none Vitamin D all along. Tests come back with no Vitamin D or very little. I ran out in the sun, with no sunscreen and  now I garden, so Vitamin D should not be an issue, but it is. When I don't have enough Vitamin D, I get mouth sores (not herpes). I take Vitamin D, for two days they are gone, and then come back, until I take my next round of D once a week. Previously, the mouth sores which are mostly on the tongue, and inside cheeks of the mouth are so painful, I hate to eat. Trust me, I haven't gained weight from that! Oddly enough, the doctor questions this. I did have a low white count, which was monitored, but it came up to the bottom low range of the lowest normal.

I am thinking I have a parathyroid problem....can anyone relate to this?

Thank you for the advice! What is odd is I do have a healthy diet, fish included, and dairy in moderation and because I am short, my weight averages 96 pounds, give to take 3 pounds.  Plus, I do go outside.

I have a lab request from the RH doctor to be taken early December to check PTH, Calcium, Vit D (again)  and CBC. I think he is leaning toward the parathyroid gland.  Considering how I tried to keep healthy entering into my older years, I can not believe I am plagued with this, whatever.

I don't believe I have liver, Crohns, kidney or collitis problems.  I do have an overactive bladder, and the urine odor is awful, and it is not pill induced. It was checked for infection, but nothing shows up. That's another oddity to the whole mess.

Somehow I believe this is all related. If it is parathyroid, and there is a cyst or tumor, once removed, I should feel great!  I will still have the Osteoarthritis, and senile Osteoporosis...but I think the Fibro and alot of the bone/muscle pain, and this tremendous fatigue will be gone. If it isn't, well, I will need to face the fact, it is what it is.

Thanks so much, and if you have anything else, please give me the heads up!

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
The cause of persisting low Vit D should be found out. One is diet low in Vit D. Apart from sunlight other good sources of Vit D are beef liver, fleshy part of the fish, egg yolk, fish oils and cheese.
Since Vit D is a fat soluble vitamin, disorders affecting fat metabolism can affect Vit D absorption. These include liver disorders, Crohn’s disease, colitis, and kidney problems.
Along with vitamin D enriched food, a healthy diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables is also recommended to increase the levels of vitamin D.
Hyperthyroid state can also lower your WBC and Vit D levels. Hyperparathyroidism too should be looked into.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
