What might be causing muscle clenching after contraction?

For a few months now off and on, my stomach muscles have clenched up and squeezed after coughing, some times after a hard sneeze, bending over, or quickly contracting them in any way. I brought this up to my family doctor at my last check-up and he said it sounded like they were tired out from over-use. But I haven't really over-used them, in fact I hate to say I lead a bit of a sedentary life. Now, my pectoral muscles are doing the same and my muscles in my back underneath my arms. I'm concerned about this. Could anyone suggest what might be the cause, and what could maybe help it go away? For instance certain stretches? Or if I need to seek medical care for a potentially serious illness. Thanks
