Why am I experiencing weird "smell" sensations?

So, I specifically remember being around the age of 10 or 11 and having a certain smell sensation connected to that time. Now, every year or so, I experience the same sort of sensation on and off for a period of a few weeks. When it occurs, it is intermittent, but consistently occurs every few minutes throughout the day. I can only describe it as a smell because I have no other words to describe the sensation, but it really doesn't smell like anything. It's more of a feeling, I guess? However, it's extremely distracting and after a week or so, it almost makes me feel sick. I don't know if anyone else has had this happen, but I'm a bit worried since phantosmia has been associated with neurological problems.
