anemia w/sensitive stomach

I have anemia and my stomach cannot tolerate the Iron/Ferrous pills that are the usual medicine prescribed.  I was taking pills from a health food store for weeks - six a day (26 mg each) - but my stomach (which has always been sensitive) rebelled dramatically and so I stopped taking anything for anemia and my stomach felt better almost immediately but Iam very tired now.  Is there anything on the market, that is aimed at someone like me, that I can tolerate OK?
Thank You.

You are not alone in that I have been anemiac for years and take prescribed non sulfa iron. Even though I have tested positive for pylori and am diagnosed with acid reflux, irritable bowel and diviticulitis the doctors dismiss it as common for me. A note here is that I also have a slightly high WBC but the rest of my lab work is fairly normal. Occassionally my MCH is high or low. I have significant hair loss that is blamed on the anemia as well. Though not related I also have tmj, high cholesteral, A1antitrypsin (inherited) emphasema and degenerative disc disease with herniated discs in the L-S-C levels. I also have three kidneys with a duplicate void system and mitral valve prolapse, both of these conditions are birth defects along with the stomach/esophagus flap. it is a known fact that tmj, acid reflux and irritable are part of fibromyalgia-another diagnoses. there is speculation as to whether or not degenerative disc is heriditary or undermines something more serious in younger patients. It is my belief that being anemiac contributes to my severe lack of energy, are you unusually tired?
sincerely,

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!

I read through your post very carefully and based on that I feel that you are possibly suffering from Celiac Disease/Ulcerative Colitis/Irritable Bowel Syndrome. All these result in tender abdomen, loose stool or loose stools alternating with constipation, abdominal distention, cramps etc. Please refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coeliac_disease http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulcerative_colitis

Maybe that’s the cause of your anemia. I would strongly recommend you to see a gastroenterologist (a specialist who looks after the diseases of our digestive system). Maybe your physician can recommend someone. For people who cannot tolerate oral iron, injectable iron preparations are there.

Here is a link for you to go through for a complete list of iron rich food. http://www.loveyourbaby.com/iron-rich-food-list.html

It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please discuss this with your doctor and see what he thinks about it. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
